4/5/02. How sweet it was to witness Glenelg extract revenge for the unlucky and umpire assisted draw against Port at the Bay last year. Coach Honor said: "That was the best brand of football we have played since I've been coaching." It was a great win, but it will likely mean little if Glenelg cannot back up and defeat an improving North Adelaide on Saturday at the Bay. Advertiser match report HERE. |
28/4/02. Things looked alright as captain James Byrne took a shot at goal from about 15 metres out, slight angle and no pressure, in the first minute of the game. He missed. Glenelg were only to score another point for the remainder of the first half. After applying strong pressure to Sturt in the first term, Glenelg went into the quarter time huddle 13 points down. What followed in the second term must rate as a low point in the playing history of the club. Sturt kicked 10.2 to a miserable, solitary point in the second term. Sturt moved the ball from the centre square with absolute ease and were able to kick long, under minimal pressure, to their marking forwards on the tiny Unley Oval. Despite the fact that Sturt was using it's third-string ruckman, Smith, Golding and Baldwin were all incapable of giving Glenelg first use of the ball from the stoppages. Coach Honor said after the game that he came to the ground full of confidence and rating his side a chance to win. It is clear that the players did not share that same belief, either in themselves or each other. When Glenelg did move the ball forward, it was with no system, long, high kicks to no particular target were the order of the day, equally common were inaccurate short passes and handballs that the Sturt defence mopped up with ease. No Glenelg forward looks capable of taking a contested mark, Marcus Baldwin who started with 5 goals against South in round 1 seems to jump far to early, he was coming down as the Sturt defenders were rising for a mark. Sam Logan looks completly out of sorts, a shadow of the confident goal sneak of last year. Brad Smith was stretchered off in the last term and may require a knee reconstruction. The club is now really in crisis from a playing perspective. Watching that second term made a trip to the dentist seem like a pleasant outing. How and when will the decline be halted? Advertiser match report HERE. |
12/4/02. After 3 rounds the league and reserves sides are yet to win a game! At least the junior sides are looking good, with both the under 19's and under 17's undefeated and at the top of the ladder. Glenelg have the bye next week and then take on form side Sturt, at Unley in round 5. Advertiser match report HERE. |
6/4/02. A 0-2 start to the season is greatly disappointing, and it will take a mighty effort against Central District at Adelaide Oval on Friday night to prevent a 0-3 outcome. Glenelg's best for the second week in a row was clearly Kane Cornes. With Port Power starting the season in the same fashion as the Bays, Cornes will likely be given a recall to the AFL this week. The Tiger defence was magnificant against Norwood, but neither Logan or Baldwin were able to post a major all day. Advertiser match report HERE. |
23/3/02. I can seldom remember a more disappointing match, and that is a big call given the record of the Tigers over recent years. After a competitive first quarter, South kicked 6.4 without answer from the Bays in a 20 minute burst in the second term and the match was finished as a contest thereafter. With Port Power player Derek Murray cutting the Tigers to peices in the mid-field and Crows recruit Fitzgerald kicking 5.2 in the third quarter, it was a long day indeed for Glenelg supporters. The only real positive was the outstanding effort of Marcus Baldwin who finished the match with 5.1. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
1/9/01. Season
ends for the Tigers with a dismal loss to West at the
Bay. The final match in the careers of Mark Viska and
Alistair Burke ended on a sad note, as Glenelg were never
in the hunt in what was a disapointing display. Final
scores: West 11.10 (76) defeated Glenelg 5.13 (43). Messenger match report HERE. |
25/8/01. Five
goals and four points for the third quarter for a match
score of six goals six? Played in a quagmire at Prospect,
the match was there for the taking for the side that
wanted it most. The score line reflects that ii was not
Glenelg. North are only half a match behind Glenelg and face Norwood and Sturt in its' last 2 matches, while Glenelg plays its' last match against West at the Bay on Saturday. Messenger match report HERE. |
19/8/01. Despite
the Eagles blitzing the Tigers at the centre bounces and
general stoppages, the Bays were only 6 points down at
half time. Glenelg's attack on the ball and some fierce
tackling, combined with some poor kicking for goal by the
Eagles, kept Glenelg in the match. It went down hill from
then on for the Tigers, as the Eagles came away with a 33
point win in blustery and wet conditions at the Bay. Messenger match report HERE. |
11/8/01. Glenelg
fought back late in the game, after allowing Sturt to
lead by 9 goals half way through the third quarter. With
Golding on top in ruck and taking some telling marks
around the groung, Glenelg kicked 4 goals in a row to
trial by 5 goals at three quarter time, eventually losing
the match by 4 goals. After last weeks effort, it was a
dissapointment to lose to Sturt, however they have been
the form side of recent weeks, and Glenelg once agin
showed that it has made considerable inprovement since
the start of the year. Glenelg moved the ball into their foward 50 at least as often as Sturt but were unable to consistently convert these movements into scoring opportunites. Glenelg must find another key foward to supplement Sam Logan. McEntee showed glimpses of form, taking 2 strong marks in the last term, but Ottens has struggled since coming back from inury, and spent much of the match against Sturt on the bench. Advertiser match report HERE. |
4/8/01. Glenelg
were up by 12 points with 2 minutes to play. In a low
scoring game, it looked a match winning lead. A holding
the ball decision in the centre lead to a Port goal and
then a snap from the pocket by Port's Tony Brown levelled
the scores. The final siren blew as soon as the ball
rolled over the goal line. Frequent visitors to this web
site know that I very rarely mention umpires, but this
was the worst display I have ever witnessed. Frankly,
Glenelg were robbed. 2 ludicrous 50 metre penalties in
the third term and an amazing holding the ball decision
led to Port goals and caused Glenelg captain Matthew
Golding to express his displeasure at 3-quarter time, as
did club general manager Jeff Zadow at full time. Full forward Sam Logan was brilliant, while Kevin Maher played his most complete game for the club. Full back Paul Sherwood played his best game for the season, probably his best since 1999. Glenelg's small brigade of Bode, Cornes and Greenwood were on top in the midfield for most of the day. Despite the disappointing end to the game, Glenelg can be proud to have pushed the league leaders so hard. They must now keep the ball rolling against Sturt at Unley next Saturday. Messenger match report HERE. |
28/7/01. The inclusion of Norwood recriut Brad
Smith (201 centremetres) and the return of Luke Ottens
(194 centremetres) gave the Tiger forward set up a much
more imposing presence. With Golding winning the ruck and
taking many telling marks in defence, Mellody on top in
the midfield, Venables on top at centre half forward and
Logan dangerous in a forward pocket the Tigers were ahead
all day, other than the first few minutes. Paul Sherwood
was magnificent, holding the dangerous Pascoe to 4 goals,
2 of which were scored from free kicks. In a nail biting
final term the Tigers managed to stay ahead and were
given a rousing send-off by their long suffering
supporters. Norwood players left the ground to a
different reception, subject to a torrent of abuse from
their disgruntled supporters, who clearly had not
expected to lose the Glenelg. Glenelg face Port at home next week for the second time this season. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
14/7/01.
The season slipped from bad to terrible on Saturday for
the Bays at Elizabeth. Martin Mellody was carted to
hospital after half time with heart palpatations. Simon
Hele badly damaged his already reconstructed left
shoulder... the captain may well have played his last
game. Ryan Smyth was also hospitalised with a serious
shoulder injury and Ben Thompson badly sprained an ankle.
Glenelg were always going to struggle against the the current premiers, and with these injuries the task was made that much harder. Final scores: central 17.11 (123) to Glenelg 8.2 (50). Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
7/7/01.
After a competitive first term the Bays found themselves
only 10 points down, despite kicking into a strong
breeze. It went donhill from there. Final scores: |
30/6/01.
In a dismal first half of footy at Adelaide oval, Glenelg
could only manage 2 golas to West's 13. The Bays can take
little comfort from the fact that they matched West's
score in the second half. By this time the game was over. Glenelg can take even less comfort from the fact that they have to front up against the Eagles at Woodville next week, in the coresponding fixture last year thay were beaten by 140 points, and if Saturday's effort against West was any indication, the result this week may be similar. A win would be a miracle. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
17/6/01.
A first term fightback after Port had kicked the first 4
goals of the match, gave false hope to Tiger fans at the
Bay on Saturday. After 2 goals early in the second term to Glenelg, it became one way traffic As Port buried Glenelg. The Tigers were absolutley flogged in the ruck, and as a consequence were unable to win the ball from the centre. That, combined with some very basic skill errors, led to a dirty afternoon. Sam Logan was the one bright spot on a very dreary day. His 6.1 was an excellent return from a forward pocket, he led hard, took marks under pressure and made the most of his chances. He looks to be an outstanding prospect. On another positive note, the one difference between this year and last is the good results being achieved by the reserves and juniors, with all sides defeating Port Adelaide. Bay fans are wondering how long until this success starts to filter through to the league side. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
8/6/01.
Despite having more of the ball and more scoring shot,
Glenelg were still unable to get over Norwood at the
Parade. Played in windy mddy conditions, Glenelg failed
to capitolise on their chances, and despite a surge in
the last term, went down by 16 points. The Tigers must now front up to Port at the Bay. The Magpie line up is tipped to include former Tiger Mark Harwood, an inclusion that will add spice to the clash. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
7/6/01. After being dropped to the reserves for missing a team meeting, Port Power key-position player Mark Harwood has requested and been granted a transfer to the Port Magpies. Percieved by some Bay fans as being disinterested in the Glenelg Football Club, Harwwood's form this season had been ordinary, he had failed to add to his 28 game tally of AFL games. |
2/6/01.
The only bright part of the day was well before the
league kick off at 2.20pm. Glenelg's reserves side
inflicted a hiding on South with the final scores Glenelg
30.21 to south 2.2 (14). Better known as a defender,
Glenelg's Craig Tasborski kicked 11 goals and surely
staked a claim for a place in the league side against
Norwood on Friday night. The reserves result was not a sign of things to come as South flogged Glenelg in the league match, final scores South 22.21 (153) to Glenelg 14.10 (94). Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
26/5/01.
204 kicks to 171, 91 marks to 60, 124 handballs to 97-
the stats say it all, Glenelg were simply outclassed by
Sturt at Unley in round 9. Final scores: Sturt 14.16
(100) to Glenelg 5.14 (44). Injury woes continue for the Bays, with Matthew Golding now expected to miss another 2 weeks, whilst Duncan Draper will be out for 4 weeks, after missing the Sturt match following surgery to remove a benign tumour from his foot. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
22/5/01.
Former Glenelg and Carlton champion Stephen Kernahan has
been inducted into the AFL hall of fame. The hero of the
1985 Glenelg grand final victory was inducted along with
9 others, including former North Adelaide champ Barrie
Robran. |
20/5/01.
Glenelg chalked up their second win of the season after
defeating North at the Bay in their round 8 clash. The
match seemed a formality as Glenelg totally outplayed
North in the first term to go in 40 point leaders at the
first break. But North took the game up to the Bays, to be within 20 points at three-quarter time and coming home with the assistance of the breeze. But Glenelg made amends for a poor third quarter and ran out 32 point victors. A win against struggling Sturt at Unley on Saturday would leave Glenelg 1 game plus percentage out of the 5. Advertiser match report HERE. |
28/4/01.
The 2.10 to 1.4 half time score line on a fine, sunny
day, tells a story. In another dark day for the club, on
which all 4 sides were defeated, Glenelg lost ruckmen
Angwin (hamstring) and Golding (knee). The extent of the
injuries is not yet clear. On the other side of the ruck
ledger, Brooke Fogden made a good return to league ranks
after recovering from the knee injury he sustained in
1999. Glenelg made 9 changes for this match, in a bid to arrest a 4 match losing streak. Considering the hiding the Eagles have handed to Glenelg in their last 3 meetings, a 47 point loss was better many anticipated, which in itself is a sad reflection of the season thus far. Advertiser match report HERE. |
28/4/01.
The season is fast slipping away. After a strong first
half effort, Glenelg were simply embarrasing in the
second half. Basic skill errors were common place,
amongst experienced players who are simply not performing
to expectation. Fumbles, misdirected kicks and hand balls
and dropped marks are indicative of the Tiger's chronic
lack of confidence. A repeat of the second half effort against the Eagles at Adelaide Oval next week will result in an almighty flogging. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
21/4/01. About
the only positives to come out of the day were the strong
performances of Brooke Fogden and Ben McEntee in the
reserves. Mark Viska made his long awaited return to the
league side, but had little impact on the game. Glenelg's
skill level, or lack of it was a major concern, while the
stats from the match tell a gloomy story. Central had 37
more kicks and 49 more handballs. There's not much more
to say. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
14/4/01. The
loss against South means that Glenelg must now face up to
current premiers Central District, with the knowledge
that a loss will mean a 1/3 win/loss ratio. A 66 point loss to South is simply not acceptable and the match once again highlighted that the Tigers are in desperate need of a full forward and centre half forward. Much of the rest of the season will ride on coach Brenton Honor's ability to find players able to succesfully fulfill these 2 roles from within the Tiger's current list.. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
7/4/01.
A strong Port Adelaide line-up showed Glenelg how to use
the football efficiently at Alberton on Saturday. The
Bays had as much of the ball as Port, but basic skill
errors, over use of the ball and an inability to move the
ball systematically into the forward lines saw the Tigers
soundly defeated. Glenelg were only able to kick 3 points into the wind in the first term and were playing catch-up football thereafter. Matthew Liptak broke down with hamstring problems very early in the first term and his future seems highly doubtful. Also of concern to the Tigers is the poor form of full-foward David Hams, who cannot seem to get his hands on the footy and was moved from full-forward for the second game running. Sudjai Cook played perhaps his best game for the Tigers, taking several pressure marks in defence before moving forward late in the game and becoming one of 6 Tigers to kick a single goal for the match. Cornes and Hele were strong performers in the mid-field, whilst Angwin did enough to further suggestions that, at just 17, he is an AFL star in the making. The reserves had a strong win, with Tiger vice-captain Ben Moore playing well enough to be contender for Liptak's spot next week, in the must win game against South at Noarlunga. Like the league side, the reserves had no one kick more than 2 goals, with Ben McEntee only kicking 1 goal and having a generally quiet day, leaving the Tigers with few options to replace Hams at full-foward. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
30/3/01.
This was a promising start to the season for the Tigers.
Starting the last quarter 1 point down and kicking into a
strong breeze, many expected Glenelg to fade out of the
match. Led by best on ground Kane Cornes, Glenelg put in
a spirited effort and kicked 4 goals for the quarter
whilst restricting Sturt to just 1 goal. A strong crowd of 4,000 was on hand to witness the start of the match and the crowd seemed to increase as the game went on, at least 5,000 were on hand to witness the end of the match. There were stirring scenes after the final siren as the players moved as a group toward the Cricketers club and aknowledged the presence of Glenelg greats, including Cornes, Chiggwiden and McDermott, on the club balcony. A strong crowd and wins to all 4 grades was an excellent start to season 2001. However, of concern is how Glenelg will cope without its AFL players Cornes, Bode, Angwin and Harwood. Cornes was easlily BOG and will almost certainly play for the Power next week, whilst Bode and Angwin were amongst the best players. The form of David Hams who did not return to the ground after half time is also a concern. On the positive side, the Bays still have Viska, Fogden, Kelly, Thornborrow and Ottens to come into the side. Many commentators feel that Sturt will stuggle to make the 5 this year. Glenelg face a big test next Saturday, fronting up to Port at Alberton. Sunday Mail match report HERE. |
29/3/01.
Newly appointed captain Simon Hele will lead a new-look
Tiger outfit onto the Bay Oval on Saturday, to face Sturt
in their round one clash. New recruits include; Adam Hay and Brad Stevens from North Melbourne, Ben Thompson who has returned to the Bay from St Kilda, Luke Ottens who has returned from Melbourne, Nathan Irvin from Sturt, Phillip McKenzie from Claremont, David Willet from Corowa and Matthew Liptak and Wayne Thornborrow who have both returned from retirement. In addition to the new recriuts, Glenelg will have the services of Ben Moore, Ben Higgins, Mark Viska, and brooke Fogden, all of whom missed all, or the majority of last season with injury. |
17/3/01.
Having not seen any of the earlier trial games and being
unfamiliar with many of the new recruits, I was uncertain
how seriously Glenelg were taking this match. It
certainly did not look good, as Glenelg were uncertain,
indirect and much less deperate than their opposition.
The 3 quarter time address from the coach removed any
doubts about how serious he was taking the contest.
Several players were blasted and Honor told the team that
the had "completely wasted a Saturday
afternoon" and that they were falling back into the
bad habits of last year, playing for themselves instead
of following the team pattern set for them. Glenelg front-up against North next week, in their last trial prior to the start of the minor round. |
9/12/00.
Glenelg legend and 1940 Magery Medalist Mel Brock has
died. Brock, also a member of Glenelg's 1934 premiership
side was aged 85. Brock made his debut for Glenelg aged 16 in 1932. He played his last game for Glenelg-West in 1942. He played 166 games in all, scored 60 goals and won the best and fairest award in 1935 and 1940. Brock remained a club stalwart all his life and was still attending club functions this year. |
30/10/00.
Kane Cornes has been drafted by Port Power. Picked up by
the Power with their second draft pick and number 20
overall, 17 year old Cornes will be reunited with older
brother Chad at the Power. His selection by the Power is
a bonus for the Tigers, as they will retain his services
when he is not playing in the AFL. 17 year old midfielder Jarrod McMahon was picked up by the Western Bulldogs with their first pick at number 10 overall. Another 17 year old, half-back Jarrad Sundqvist was selected bySydney at number 54. |
5/10/00.
Brenton Honor has accepted a 2 year contract as senior
coach of the Glenelg Football Club. The 39 year old former South Adelaide defender has coached the Glenelg reserves for the past 2 years, winning 6 of the last 7 games in season 2000, to finish just out of the final 5. Honor was selected ahead of a field of 25 applicants. Glenelg chief Jeff Zadow said Honor's application was "head and shoulders above the other contenders." Honor took Amateur League sides Happy Valley (92and 93) and Goodwood Saints (97) from bottom to top, and Tiger fans are hoping he can emulate this feat with the Bays in 2001. |
2/9/00. Martin Mellody has won the 2000 best and fairest for the Glenelg Football club. He won the John.H.Ellers trophy after polling 14 votes, despite missing 4 games with injury. Simon Hele and Matthew Golding finished equal second on 11 votes. Alistair Burke finished with 10 votes. |
2/9/00. Glenelg under 19's have been defeated in their preliminary final against Port Adelaide. Final scores; Port 15.13 (103) to Glenelg 14.10 (94). |
19/8/00. Glenelg under 19's have defeated Norwood in the first semi-final. Final scores: Glenelg 14.8 (92) to Norwood 10.9 (69). Best players: Miles, Mahar, Abbott, B. Bell, Logan, Stratham, Sundquist. Goal kickers Logan 5, Neal 4, N.Bell, 2, Mahar, Menz, Pollard 1. |
18/8/00.
Tony McGuinness has been sacked as Glenelg coach.
McGuinness, who had one year left to run in his contract,
was informed by letter on Friday night that his services
were no longer required. Club General Manager Jeff Zadow said that McGuinness was dismissed because of poor on-field performances and other issues relating to his contract that would not be disclosed. McGuinness was responsible for player development and all senior coaches, in addition to coaching the league side. Glenelg finished bottom, fourth and bottom in three years under McGuinness and had a 20-42 win loss record. Glenelg officials are rumored to have travelled to Tasmania for discussions with ex Norwood legend Gary Macintosh last week. |
12/8/00. It was a sad send off for Nick Chigwidden as the Tigers went down to Central 17.10 (112) to 5.5 (35). Chiggy was chaired from the ground to a standing ovation. Full match report HERE. |
10/8/00.
Club captain Nick Chigwidden has announced his
retirement. Chiggy told the players of his decision after
training on Tuesday night. He will play his last game
against Central at Elizabeth on Saturday, having made his
debut against the same club at Football Park 14 seasons
ago. |
6/8/00.
After being competitive for three quarters, the Bays
folded in the last to be beaten by goals by South at the
Bay. Coach McGuinness said: "Nine goals to two in
the last quarter. They were playing to make the finals,
but we were playing to get off the bottom," he said. "Today we were five points down at the last change and got blown out of the water. You have to question how much we want it. At some stage you have to say 'I am coming on as a player and I'm going to make a difference today'," McGuinness said. Full match report HERE. |
29/7/00. Glenelg have been defeated by Norwood at Adelaide Oval. Final scores: Norwood 19.9 (123) defeated Glenelg 14.11 (95). "I thought there was a 10 minute patch late in the third quarter where we stopped dead, and in the last quarter we didn't capitalise on the many opportunities that we had," coach Tony McGuiness said. We kept kicking it long to no space but even when we did take a mark or find space, we didn't nail the goals." Full match report HERE. |
22/7/00. Glenelg finally secure a victory! A 9 point win over North at Adelaide Oval has given Glenelg some chance of avoiding the wooden spoon. Final scores: Glenelg 14.12 to North 13.9 (87). Coach McGuinness said: "At three-quarter time we were under the pump, but I thought we gutsed it out fantastically well in the last quarter." Full match report HERE. |
15/7/00. Glenelg lose to West at the Bay. Final scores West 7.17 (59) to Glenelg 6.11 (47). "Wasted opportunities, poor decisions and missed shots inside 50 cost us," coach McGuinness said. "We certainly had our chances." Full match report HERE. |

Glenelg led by 33-points at the half way mark of the second term, but Port quickly erased the lead. Coach McGuinness said after the match "While we continue to dominate the game on the ground and the scoreboard only to let the opposition kick five in a short period of time and slip back into the game again - we will struggle." 13/4/00. Eugene Warrior has walked on the Glenelg Football Club only 3 weeks after signing a 2 year contract with the club. Football Operations manager John Schneebichler said: "After three weeks if things don't work out, do you pull the pin? We are dumbfounded and from the Glenelg Football Club it is disappointing and totally unacceptable." Warrior, 23, said he wanted to re-charge his batteries and spend more time with his girlfreind. |

impact against his old club as the Tigers went down 18.14
(122) to 16.4 (100). Full match report HERE.

22/3/00. The Tigers today picked up discarded Norwood forward Eugene Warrior. Warrior, also ex Port Magpies and Crows, left Norwood last week under a "mutual agreement". Glenelg supporters who witnessed Warrior's final quarter for Norwood against Glenelg in the first semi-final last year, will be aware that Warrior can win a match off his own boot. His signing is a coup for a Glenelg unit that has strugggled to kick a winning score in recent years.
