ROUND TWO
Saturday the 18th
of March.
GLENELG 3.6 5.10
8.11 13.15 (93)
NORTH 2.2 4.2 7.6 9.7 (61)
Glenelg took the
points after clearly out playing North all day but
struggling to translate their supremacy onto the score
board. Glenelg lacked system when bringing the ball
forward, and should have won by a lot more than the
eventual 32 point margin.
Full forward David Hams was outstanding in his first
match for the club, kicking 4 goals despite the generally
poor delivery of up field players. Hams will be a match
winner for Glenelg if the ball can be delivered
systematically.
Ben McEntee was outstanding in both attack and defence,
finishing the game with 13 marks. Richard Kelly supplied
his usual drive out of the centre and Nick Chigwidden
marked the start of his record breaking eighth season as
club captain with a typically gutsy performance.
Of concern was the poor form of Matthew Golding who
struggled to get a tap against former Crow team mate
Lucas Herbert. The Tigers have limited options in the
ruck and Golding needs to lift.
Glenelg was certainly extremely committed and their
tackling was first rate. If it can deliver the ball into
the forward lines with system and purpose the club will
be in for an excellent year.
The match report is extracted from "The Sunday
Mail".
CHIGWIDDEN
INSPIRES YOUNG TIGERS
Glenelg
comprehensively out played a "disgraceful"
North Adelaide outfit all day, but waited until the last
quarter before showing signs of pulling clear on the
scoreboard at Glenelg oval yesterday.
The Tigers eventually ran out winners by 32 points, 13.15
(93) to 9.7 (61), but never broke more than two goals
clear until the fourth quarter, when they piled on 5.4 to
2.1.
Appalled North Adelaide coach Chris McDermott said it was
no more than silly luck his side was within striking
distance at the final break.
From the opening bounce the difference between the two
sides was unmistakable - Glenelg delivered accurately and
attacked the ball with a fierceness the Roosters never
even approached, while when North did get the ball, its
disposal was woeful. "Nothing worked today - to be
within two goals at three-quarter time was unbelievable
because of how badly we played," McDermott said.
"Our attack on the football, especially at throw-ins
and bounces was disgraceful."
North's saving grace was that when they did create
scoring opportunities, they capitalised on them.
Glenelg had the vast majority of the play throughout the
game, but took less consistent advantage of its forays
into the forward 50m than North.
That fact, at least in part, came down to the fight
displayed by Rooster defenders Ray Ebel and Scott
Sutherland, who McDermott pointedly described as North's
"only" good players.
The Bays were led from the centre by Richard Kelly and
evergreen Nick Chigwidden, who showed why he was named
captain for a record eighth season with a persistence,
aggression and an extreme work ethic that inspired his
younger team-mates.
Ben McEntee exploded in the second term with seven kicks
and six exciting marks and continued his form for the
rest of the game to provide stand-out performance for
Glenelg in attack and defence, finishing the match with
two goals.
Glenelg coach Tony Mcguinness was not overly concerned
with his sides inablity to pull clear of a patently
sub-standard opponent.
Instead he was quietly confident the game would break
open at some stage and we were the ones who did it".
Glenelg lost Mark Harwood and Todd Winstanely within
minutes of each other late in the first term - Winstanely
not to return after being stretchered off with a knee
injury after a marking clash in the goal square.
Harwood also left - in obvious pain - after a heavy clash
in a marking contest, but returned and finished with two
goals.
Neither is a serious injury and nor is Mark Viska's hip
soreness.
North, however will be without Daniel Motlop for at least
two weeks after he injured an ankle.
