Honor's tactics
can't save Bays.
By Paul Kermode.
Fine conditions. Adelaide Oval in perfect nick. Three
goals to half time. On the face of it, something did not
add up about Woodville-West torrens' clash with Glenelg
on Saturday.
And while a half-time scoreline of 2.10 to 1.4 would
suggest a series of pitched one-on-one battles across the
ground, the reality was quite different.
The Tigers flooded their backline and, whenever in doubt,
headed straight for the boundry line to stop the flow of
play. The result was lose players in the Eagles' defence
who won a swag of uncontested possession but struggled to
pinpoint team mates in a highly crowded forward line.
It appeared a negative tactic from first year coach
Brenton Honor but he insisted the controversial tactic
was designed with victory in mind, not to minimise the
damage against an Eagles side full of running power and
forward options.
"I wouldn't say it's a defensive tactic. It's
something different," Honor said. "The flooding
game doesn't have to be just flooding back, you can flood
forward as well. We flooded back really well but didn't
flood forward very well.
"That's a confidence thing, they're focusing so much
on getting back and when we did get the footy, they
didn't have the confidence to flood forward. It's a very
taxing style of game and a game where they've got to
concentrate and work hard. They're the specific areas
where we haven't done enough. That was part of the whole
soul-searching week - we wanted to play lads that have a
passion to play for Glenelg and we wanted to see which
players would take on instructions and play to a game
plan.
"It could have come off but it didn't.
"Always the plan was to be within two goals at
three-quarter time and we'll go for it.
"Unfortunately that two goals turned into four and a
half. It's hard on them because they put so much into it
but weren't rewarded at the end, which is
disappointing."
Eagles boss Ron Fuller was pleased with the two points, a
47-point victory and the fact that his side bounced back
after its forst loss of the season. He praised the
players' ability to adapt but said he would take very
little else from Saturday's encounter.
"We could only do what we could under the
circumstances," he said. "I think we probably
had a bit too much time sometimes and some of the
decision making wasn't instinctive because of it. I was
happy with the way they toughed it out and they just
tried to do things the way Glenelg played.
"There were a lot of people in the crowd who weren't
very supportive of it but it's not my position to judge
Glenelg. I don't know what the reasons for it were but we
went out there to play our type of football and because
we were'nt allowed to, we had to adjust and I thought we
adjusted pretty well."
