Richardsons run
riot for West.
By Lee Jeloscek.
West Adelaide rejoined the winners' circle with a
55-point victory against an out of form Glenelg at
Richmond Oval yesterday.
Despite an inspirational speech from Matthew Liptak - who
announced his retirement before the game - Glenelg was
unable to mantain the intensity needed to keep with a
fast, skillful West Adelaide outfit.
Led by the Richardsons - Ed at centre half-forward and
Adam at full-forward - the Bloods quickly turned a nine
point half time lead into a match winning 28-point buffer
with a 7 goal third term, paving the way for a second
quarter thrashing.
Starting up forward, Ed Richardson was brilliant, hauling
in plenty of marks and teaming well with Paul Jarvis,
Chris Barrett and Scott Hahn. Adam Richardson ran riot
after quarter time, leading into space and crashing
through packs to grab a match high 14 marks.
Despite struggling for accuracy, Adam still finished with
six goals - and seven behinds- but could have easily
kicked a dozen, if not for poor finishing.
In an intense and aggressive contest, Glenelg threw
everything at the Bloods in the first half, lead by
brilliant teenager Kane Cornes (22 kicks, nine marks,
five handballs) and midfielder Martin Mellody (17 kicks,
four handballs).
But the Bays appeared lost when West lifted its game a
notch after the main break, scoring 12 goals to 5.
Glenelg skipper Simon Hele, who was disappointed with his
side's second half, said he was sorry Glenelg could not
win the game for Liptak.
"He spoke to us before the game and told us that he
has retired, and we really wanted to win the game for
him," Hele said.
"It's really disappointing that we were unable to
win the game for him. It's still early in the season, but
we really need to turn some things around and find some
form.
"We have to play hard for all four quarters".
West coach Ian Borchard said the tough nature of the
clash made the win all the more important for the club.
"I'm happy for the boys. It's still very early in
the season but it is a good start," said Borchard,
determined for the Bloods to be a serious contender.
"I thought Glenelg were great in the first half. It
was like an arm wrestle in the first half - it was tight.
"It was a very important game for both teams. We
were really keen to bounce back after last week and
obviously they (Glenelg) were hungry to win.
But to the boy's credit, they dug deep and were able to
over-run them after half-time."
