ROUND TEN
Monday 15th of
May.
NORWOOD 3.6 8.8
11.11 16.12 (108)
GLENELG 1.2 1.3 3.5 5.9 (39)
Glenelg's woeful
season continued at The Bay against Norwood on Monday.
The loss of all of it's AFL listed players (with the
exception of Adelaide's rookie listed Golding) and a
series of injuries has exposed a lack of depth that is
reflected in the results for the season so far. Tiger
fans can only hope that the early blooding of so many
young players will prove to be a springboard for some
success later this season and in season 2001.
The match report is extracted from"The
Advertiser."
Neill leds way
for the Legs.
By David Valente.
The Redlegs put their heads down and their workrate up
for four quarters to comprehensively defeat lacklustre
Glenelg by 69 points at the Bay on yesterday.
In wet, boggy conditions Norwood bustled the ball forward
with sharper skills to a forward line led by the sure
hands of Robert Neill.
Neill laid the founations for the leg's win, booting 5.1
from six kicks in the first half before Norwood charged
ahead after the break to win 16.12 (108) to 5.9 (39).
While Neill kept the scoreboard ticking over, finishing
with the six goals, the miserly backlines led by Dale
Flemming, Scott Bassett, Lachlan Bowman and Ben Kemp
nullified or repelled Glenelg's infrequent attacks.
Through the midfield, Brett James, Jarrod Cotton - who
scores the goal of the day with a checkside from deep in
the pocket - and Damian Obst gave Norwood first use of
the ball against the formidable skills of Richard Kelly
and the run of Bays captain Nick Chigwidden.
Scott Borlase "took another step up", running
harder the longer the game went, supplying the drive
around the ground and scoring two handy goals.
Redlegs coach Neville Roberts said his team 's discipline
and workrate were the most satisfying aspects of the win.
"Our workrate and commitment to go and help each
other is as good as it's been since I've been at the
club. It was very significant to our win" Roberts
said.
Martin Mellody was quiet early but was into everything in
the second half - snapping his second goal on the final
siren - to be Glenelg's best.
The Bays suffered anearly blow, losing dynamic wingman
Shane Tipuamantamerri in the first two minutes with a
suspected broken shoulder.
He was taken to hospital for treatment but the extent of
his injury will not be known until today.
For Norwood, Bowman injured a knee and is doubtful for
Saturday's clash with West but Brad Taylor and John
Cunningham, who suffered shoulder injuries are expected
to recover.
Coach Tony McGuinness locked himself away with the team
for an extended meeting after the match, clearly looking
for a way to escape Glenelg's steadily cementing position
at the foot of the ladder.
