Bays take key
step forward.
By Doug Robertson.
Glenelg finally threw of the restraints - if for just
more than a quarter - and slipped into a stylish running
game to beat slow starting North Adelaide by 32 points at
the Bay yesterday.
The Tigers looked as smooth as any SANFL top five side
for the opening 30 minutes of the game when they banged
on 6.5 to a solitary point. The stunning start set up
Glenelg's second win for the season but the Tigers still
suffered long lapses in application which must be
eradicated if they are to develop a winning culture. But
Glenelg's start could hardly have been better.
North stood almost as spectators as Glenelg's Martin
Mellody, James Byrne and creative Matt Shir repeatedly
worked the ball out of the pivot to present big marking
Laurance Angwin, Mark Harwood and ruckman Adam Hay with
numerous opportunities.
Glenelg combined skill with hard running for the first
time in almost two months.
North scrambled into it's attacking 50m three times for
the term, but missed three relatively easy shots from
inside 40m. That encouraged Glenelg to keep taking
calculated risks.
Relieved coach Brenton Honour said Glenelg took important
steps forward but the Tigers' evolution was far from
finished. "As a team we touched the footy about 300
times, which is something we havn't done all year,"
Honor said. "The way we played in that first quarter
was what I'm happy about. Whether we play North or Port
Adelaide if we keep playing like that we'll win games
(but) we played a side which hasn't won a game so it's
all in perspective."
The future seemed bleak for North at the first break but
a significant break came over the contest when the
Roosters finally snapped into action.
Ben Setchell, inspirational skipper Scott Sutherland,
Scott Bamford and gutsy Travis Gluscheko at half-back
out-bustled the Tigers and raw rookie Mark Jamar, 17,
took control in ruck to shut down the Bay's run. North
came to within 21 poitns in the second term and for a
while left Glenelg flat footed. The third term became a
nightmare for Glenelg when Swann came strongly on the
scene at half-forward and North moved the ball through
the attacking line with fluency for the first time.
But again abysmal skills let Glenelg off the hook. The
Roosters either set up team mates with substandard foot
and hand skills or missed easy shots on goal, which
significantly, allowed Glenelg time to re-group. Daniel
Hargraves, the league's leading goalkicker, missed
everything twice and Swann, Robert Brodhurst and Shayne
Broad added two points between them from set shots inside
40m.
"It makes it hard when you're behind like that - it
was a very disappointing first quarter," coach Darel
Hart said. "I thought we were looking really good
after half time but when you don't capitolise on the
score board it doesn't mean a thing.
"But I thought they chipped away after the first
term and at least for the third week in a row we can come
away and analyse how we're playing without having to
worry about being competitive".
