Freshman Room Draw - Part Three
"Guarionex: Executive Privilege"

by Steve Maxon

As our last segment ended, the dirty business of the room draw was taking place.  Stooped in a cramped and smoke-filled back room, we were forced to place our future into the hands of a guy named "Ed," whose biggest concern was the number of steps that his VERY overweight roommate (a 380 lb black guy named Lawarran) would have to scale every day next year.

If you'll recall, Lawarran did not pay his room deposit.  Oh, what a small detail this seemed to be at the beginning of the night!  The 3rd floor would be ours, we thought, and surely no self-respecting 380-lb man would want to live on the third floor of Shen!  But as the night wore on, the switch to the basement ensued, and all the rooms on every floor were taken by the time "Ed" was to make his decision.

The front door of Shenawana Hall opens to a landing halfway in between the first floor and the basement. To ascend to the first floor, one must climb four stairs; to descend to the basement, one must go down eight. The first floor has an RA, plus the RDA, and technically, the RD.  It also is right next to the front desk and has the main lounge.  The basement has but one RA, the laundry room, and a sizable recreation area.  However, the entire floor stinks of mildew and the bathroom is the same room as the shower room...which has only two showers - and one didn't work this year. Frankly, neither floor would have been my first choice.  But which would "Ed" select?

The entire 3rd Floor Shen faction held their collective breath as "Ed" stepped forward to make his choice.  We had not anticipated an outsider ruining our plans for a second time!  "I'll take this room," "Ed" said, pointing to none other than a former freshman room in.......

This left Chris Moisio and I as the only two people left to choose a room.  Two freshman rooms were left in the basement.  Would we be able to evict both?  We doubted it - we assumed that at least one must remain.  So as we put our yellow receipts into the big sombrero, we shook hands and decided that whoever had their name called would get the
room of their choice, and the other would abide by the decision.

Marc Norton - my RA - held out the sombrero.

Joel Tom Tate - my RD - reached in.

He pulled out a slip, looked over at us, then said.....
