As the New
York Yankees made complete their utter domination of the American League
with yet another victory over the hapless Cleveland Indians, I, and my
viewing companion Mike Vreeland, began to talk of the upcoming festivities
that were inevitable upon their crowning as ultimate champions of the
major leagues.
"I don't care what happens," said Mike, who is sometimes given
to hyperbole. "If they win, this year I'm going to the
tickertape parade! It'll be my last chance to go. When I get
older, I'll have a job and kids and stuff, and I won't be able to
go."
Rather than debate the fine points of this logically tenuous statement, I
kept silent, thinking it over. Mike had a car! I did not.
Mike *could* go to the parade. By myself, I could not. This
idea was definitely something to encourage, not squelch.
I returned from October Break to find the Yankees well on their way to a
championship. I sought out Vreeland to make sure he meant what he
had said.
"Oh yeah! I'm definitely going! I'd skip a midterm if I
had to!"
Encouraged by this seeming shelving of studies, this devil-may-care
attitude towards GPA, I mentally prepared myself. We were going to
New York City. We would see the Yankees. We would be there, at
the TICKERTAPE PARADE.
Following Game Four, the Padre death blow struck inexorably, I once again
stumbled upon my friend Mike.
"I'm so mad. I heard the parade's on Monday, and I have a test
that day. I don't think I can get out of it either."
Wait a minute! What had happened to this brash, confident, Yankee
fan of Game Two? Would he allow a simple academic examination come
between him and a plumb spot on Lower Broadway, a date with destiny, a
chance to
converse with the legendary "El Duque"?????
You'll have to find out...tomorrow.
