From
Brixton to Walthamstow Central, the Victoria Line is one of London's
busiest tube lines. Plans for the Victoria Line date back to
the 1930's, but due to the war and planning issues, work on the line
didn't begin until 1962. The line opened in stages, with the
first stretch from Walthamstow to Highbury opening in 1968, then the
line reached Victoria and finally ended up in Brixton in 1971.
The line has always used Automatic Train Operation (ATO) whereby the
whole train and journey is controlled by computers, this includes
signal checks, acceleration and braking. The line serves 16
stations and is unusual on the London Underground by the fact that
it is the only line to be totally underground for it's entire
length, with the only open air section being the depot at
Northumberland Park. In 2000, the Victoria Line carried 175.4
million passengers. Victoria was the lines busiest station
with a total of 60.2 million passengers passing through the ticket
gates that year.
