One
of the newest, yet at the same time, one of the oldest lines on the
Underground. The Hammersmith and City line only gained it's
own identity in 1990, having been part of the Metropolitan line
until then. Evidence of this can still be found on the tube,
for example, at Bromley By Bow station, it says 'District and
Metropolitan Lines' above the door. The line came from the
original Metropolitan route between Paddington and Farringdon, and
reached Hammersmith in 1864. The Terminus at Barking was not
reached until 1936. Today, the line serves 28 stations over
some 16 miles of track.
