The
'Met', as it is affectionately known, holds the grand title of being
the worlds first underground railway. Opened in 1863 between
Farringdon and Paddington, the Metropolitan Railway became a massive
success with customers. It quickly extended deep into London's
north-west. The line made it as far as Verney Junction in 1894
and Brill in 1899, however, these services were withdrawn in 1936
and services beyond Amersham ended in 1961 with the end of steam hauled
trains. The Met is odd in the fact that it is only underground
for six of it's forty one route miles. The route serves 34
stations, requiring 44 trains to operate at peak periods.
Kings Cross, with an annual passenger count of 87 million people is
the lines busiest station.
