Okay, this sounds silly but you will need to find or make a small 45 degree template, then use it to make a large star point template.
 
 

Four ways to get a 45 degree diamond for your template:

1) The easiest way it to use an existing small template you have from a book or a printout from a computer quilt design program.
2) Download this template page in PDF format.  You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to get the file. Get your free reader here if you don't have it.
3) If you don't have #1, you can draft your star point in any size from 2" to infinity using a protractor.
 4) You can draft a traditional eight pointed star using graph paper and a compass if you don't have an existing diamond or a protractor. You can also use this technique if you would like to make a traditional eight pointed star in an odd size too.
