- Aegnor - (elf) A son of Finarfin, he went with the Noldor to Middle-earth
to build kingdoms of their own and seek revenge against Morgoth. His kingdom was in Dorthonion
with his brother Angrod. He died in the Dagor Bragollach (Battle of Sudden Flame), and his kingdom
of Dorthonion became desolate.
- Alatar - (maia) He is an Istari, and one of the blue wizards. Few things
are known of him, but that he went to the East with Pallando.
- Amras - (elf) A son of Fëanor, he swore the rash oath along with his father
and brothers, which proved to constantly hurt the Noldor. His kingdom was in the South-East of
Beleriand and he dwelt there with his brother Amrod. He was killed when he attacked the elves of
Sirion while attempting to get a Silmaril from Elwing.
- Amrod - (elf) A son of Fëanor, he swore the rash oath along with his father
and brothers, which proved to constantly hurt the Noldor. His kingdom was in the South-East of
Beleriand and he dwelt there with his brother Amros. He was killed when he attacked the elves of
Sirion while attempting to get a Silmaril from Elwing.
- Anárion - (human) The son of Elendil and the brother of Isildur, he
died in the siege of Barad-dur. His son was Meneldil.
- Angrod - (elf) A son of Finarfin, he went with the Noldor to Middle-earth
to build kingdoms of their own and seek revenge against Morgoth. His kingdom was in Dorthonion
with his brother Aegnor. He died in the Dagor Bragollach (Battle of Sudden Flame), and his kingdom
of Dorthonion became desolate.
- Ancalagon - (dragon) The greatest of the winged dragons. In the
battle that led to Morgoth's Fall, he was slain by Eärendil.
- Aragorn - (human) He is also known as Strider, Estel, Elessar,
Thorongil, Envinyatar, Telcontar, ranger, Dúnadan, Elfstone, heir of Isildur, and the King of
Gondor. He is the son of Arathorn and Gilraen. He married Arwen, daughter of Elrond. He
guided the hobbits to Rivendell and helped ease the pain of Frodo's wound. He was a member of
the fellowship accompanying Frodo. After Gandalf's fall in Moria, he assumed command of the
company. He led them to Lórien and then down the Anduin. At the breaking of the fellowship he
decided to follow the orcs that captured Merry and Pippin. He fought in the battle against
Saruman and he used the palantir of the Orthanc to reveal himself to Sauron. He took the Paths
of the Dead to recall the broken oath. With the army of the dead he defeated the men of Umbar
and Harad. He then took the ships into the battle on the Fields of Pelennor. He used the
"healing hands of the king" to heal Eowyn, Faramir, and Merry. He rode to the gates of Mordor,
leading an army and defeated Sauron's army. He found a sapling of the White Tree and he
replanted it in Minas Tirith. He also decreed that no man could enter Hobbiton. He was able to
choose the time of his death like the Kings of Númenor.
- Arathorn - (human) He is the father of Aragorn and the husband of
Gilraen.
- Aredhel - (elf) She is the sister of Turgon and daughter of Fingolfin.
After leaving Gondolin, she roamed with the sons of Fëanor. One day she fell under an enchantment
of Eöl's. She married Eöl and gave birth to Maeglin. While escaping to Gondolin with Maeglin, Eöl
followed her. When Eöl aimed a spear at Maeglin, Adrehel jumped in front of it and later died from
the poisonous tip.
- Arvedui - (human) An heir of Isildur, and the last King of Arnor. After
receiving the help of the snowmen, he left them by boat and was lost in a storm along with two palantir.
- Arwen - (half-elven) She is also known as Evenstar and Undómiel. She is
the daughter of Elrond and the sister of Eladdan and Elrohir. She married Aragorn, son of
Arathorn. She spent much of her life in Lorien and later visited her father in Rivendell. She
became mortal when Elrond left for Valinor and she stayed with Aragorn. At the death of
Aragorn, she went to Lórien and sadly died on Cerin Amroth.
- Aule - (vala) He is the god of crafts, and his wife is Yavanna. Against
the will of Ilúvatar, he created dwarves (what he thought the elves would be like). His maia
Sauron and Saruman both went against the will of the Valar.
