The Speed Trap Bible

Speed Traps..... O.K. we all hate them, at least those of us who are motorists do anyway. Insidious boxes just waiting to entrap unwary drivers. The real name of the type most commonly seen in the U.K. is the GATSO. That's the type you see in the photo to the right (top left). There
are also a large number of different styles of camera, three of which you can also see here. The number of new cameras available to the police is also growing and rapidly so. You'll see there are now gantry cameras behind the road signs above motorways, plus mobile cameras which are mounted in cars and vans.

Speed kills, we know, but I can imagine that trying to keep an eye out for cameras would
take anyone's eyes off the road long enough for an accident to be caused. Let's face it, we all look for them don't we? No one wants to be caught going over the limit if they can help it, even if you're not a dastardly speeder. To try and keep most cars down to 70 mph on the motorways these days is starting to become increasingly difficult. The traffic around you travels at 80+ mph and more usually 90+ mph. At 70 mph even trucks and buses overtake you. Caravans are towed past me at over 70 mph.....

So what's the answer? Governors on the engines, automatic speed limiters, more cameras (as is the case at present), more police cars? It's difficult isn't it? The other alternative is cheaper radar scanners so everyone can afford to catch the cameras before they catch you. The latter alternative seems more logical to me, even if you're not allowed to use them by law. Come on guys, drop the prices.
