THE TURQUOISE
presented by Modesty Blaze
The color of turquoise is blue.
The sky blue is the most desirable and valuable.
Turquoise comes in a variety of blues to greens...
even apple green or 'Chinese Green'.
Chips are often threaded with some other mineral.
The name of this stone comes from Turkey.
Turquoise used to come to Europe via the
Turkish Trade Route.
Turquoise has always been loved and valued.
In ancient times it was often used in amulets,
carvings, jewelry...even cosmetics.
By 4000 BC, the deposits in Sinai were worked out.
In the 16th century, Turquoise was used as currency
by the Southwest Native Americans.
They believed that Turquoise brought
Animals to the hunter,
Spoils to the warrior,
Happiness and good fortune to the home.
Turquoise represents the Earth.
'Indian Jewelry' is tradtionally represented
by Turquoise and silver jewelry...
Turquoise is fragile and chalky in its natural form,
cracks easily, chips easily...even shatters.
Today it is almost always stabilized with plastic
to make it more durable and hard,
improve its color to more a sky blue.
The color changes are seldom permanent!
It often turns greener by the year when worn,
...The Earth turning Green...
A skyblue color lasts better when it is
cushioned in gold.
Turquoise is found in
the Southwest United States.
The best quality comes from northest Iran,
and is called Persian Turquoise.
Chinese turquoise is used frequently in beading.
LAPIS LAZULI and BLUE TOPAZ are alternative
December birthstones...redheaded December birthies
love those Emeralds too!
Those born in December seem to be fascinated with
jewelry and gemstones...or,
they wear no jewelry at all. Go figure!
