AccessArt: An "evolving collection of online workshops and arts educational activities", AccessArt is an excellent resource for teachers and parents who want to get kids to improve their art skills. With projects that combine art and literacy, and printable work-sheets and notes for teachers, the site offers a fun and creative way to develop perception and visual depiction. There are currently five online workshops -- 'Draw!', 'What is Sculpture?', 'I See What You Mean', 'Sculpture Chain' and 'Applespeak' -- which are designed to stimulate inspirational drawing activities and encourage children to question the meanings of objects. These are wonderfully conceived to make art more than the basic sketching and colouring activity that it's often unimaginatively reduced to in classrooms. The site is relatively free of fancy features and animations so loading is fairly fast.

CyberSurfari: Feel like going on a treasure hunt from the comfort of your home? Then you should check out this eye-catching site. The animated main page is a real grabber and reflects the "free fun for the family" concept of the whole (ad)venture. You will have to sign up first to get a "keycode" for participation but that's not such a hassle. And once you're in, you'll probably have so much fun "hunting" that you'd forget you're raking up connection charges. There're prizes, but if you're playing to win, you might be disappointed because surfers in the US are more likely to beat you to them. Still, you can always get some kind of competition going within your own circle of family and friends with your own set of prizes. This Children's Web Surfing Alliance home page also includes links to 'Tips', 'Rules', 'Updates', 'Teachers' and 'Feedback'. Downloads are pretty swift and problem-free.

Harper's Bazaar: Another swell online style salon to help ladies with all kinds of fashion matters. Of course, this free Web version of the magazine doesn't offer as much stuff as the print edition does, but it's still worth checking out, especially if like the magazine but find it's price here prohibitive. The main page has a straightforward, not all that fashionable look, but the simple design does ease loading. Features of the month are highlighted in neat boxes, and there are direct links to 'Fashion News & Notes', 'Where We Shop' and 'Your Style Profile'. There's also a search box to help you look for specific topics, though it's limited to the contents available in the archive section. You can also sign up for a free e-mail account and submit your own opinions for possible inclusion on the 'Letters to the Editor' page.

iTraceYou.com:: Here's a real cool tool to help you find out if anyone has actually been reading all those e-mails you've been firing off. It works by notifying you everytime an e-mail you've sent is opened by the person you've addressed it to. All you have to do is register once and after that you just have to go to the site and log in to get the results of the e-mail trace. It's especially useful when you've sent off an urgent e-mail and eagerly expect a swift reply. It also lets you track your messages to make sure you've sent them to the right people. If you're not sure how it works, you can check out a set of fast tutorials including an FAQ section that deals with common queries. You can also send e-mails through the site's TraceBox. The page layout is about as basic you'd want an online program site to be, which means you don't have to twiddle your thumbs till they're sore while waiting for results.

MSN Zone.com: There're some people who think that games are one of the best reasons for getting online. If you're one of them, you would be thrilled to know that there're plenty of sites that offer games for free. This Microsoft gaming zone is one of the most wide-reaching, offering everything from 'Backgammon' and 'Blackjack' to 'Tundra Madness 2.0' and 'You Know It! Trivia'. Other interesting games available for no charge at all: '3-Hole Challenge', 'Atomica', Blender', 'Cribbage', 'Reversi'... More common ones like 'Bridge', 'Checkers', 'Chess' and 'Crossword' are here as well, and there's a useful game index that lists selections by theme -- 'Action', 'Adventure', 'Arcade', 'Board' etc. Premium games like 'Hercules & Zena', 'CyberStike 2', 'DragonRealms' and 'Fighter Ace' are listed as well though they're not as easy to access as the more basic ones. The page also features a Top 10 chart for the most popular retail games and offers e-shop links to the best deals.

SafeClimate: With all the confusing and conflicting reports about global warming coming out now, you can be forgiven for being tired of the way the topic has been overhyped, trivilised or exploitatively politicized. So how can you find out if we're actually contributing to the carbon dioxide build-up in the atmosphere that's threatening to put the heat on us? By starting with the "carbon footprint calculator" offered here to determine the levels of carbon emissions produced by "home/office energy consumption, transportation by car and plane, and in the case of organizations, paper use". The calculator ( http://www.safeclimate.net/calculator/), which comes with operating instructions, is a great way to trace the "CO2 footprint", and the results should make you a firm believer in the cause for conservation. The effectively designed site (it's lean and clean) includes loads of features on climate-related topics including an 'Action for Individuals' section that offers "a host of opportunities for taking concrete action to reduce your individual climate impact".
