AlienScalpel.com: OK, let's just assume that you've just returned home after being abducted by aliens and need some help to deal with the trauma induced by the experience. Forget about turning to your folks or friends who're never going to believe you. Go here instead. Not only will you find all the relevant facts about the alien abduction phenomenon, you can also watch videoclips re-creating the experience and audio files dealing with related topics. And your host Dr Roger Leir, who seems to know a lot about "mysterious pellets" and all kinds of alien implants, will not only reassure you that you're not alone but that you can actually use what you've experienced to be a more knowing being. One of the regular attractions at this site is the impant surgery performed by Dr Leir on abductees and articles and photos documenting the procedure (also available in streaming audio).

Britney's Guide to Semiconductor Physics: What, you didn't know that pop princess Britney Spears is also an expert in semiconductor physics? Well, we just let you in on a closely-guarded secret. Anyway, Ms Spears takes a break from singing and dancing in her skimpy costumes to act as your guide to such topics as 'The Basics of Semiconductors', 'p-n Junctions', 'Finite Barrier Quantum Well', 'Photonic Crystals' and 'Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers' here. And you better make sure there's enough room in your head to cram all the complex data if you don't want to be humiliated by your favourite singer. But if you do feel like it's all getting a bit too heavy for you, you can always click on 'Picture Galleries' and watch shome shots of the superstar or explore the Britney Spears links listed in a separate section. You can also scan Spears' song lyrics to find the meaning of life and enter a chat room to discuss your idol's vital statistics.

Car Talk: You'll find lots of sites devoted to cars and various aspects of car care through any of the search engines. But not many will be as neat and catchy as this superb site. With such sections as 'Driver Distraction Zone', 'Car Report', 'News' and 'Advice', this certainly tries to cover all the bases that would interest the not so mechanically minded car owner. There're lots of fun features like a regularly updated poll and a daily quiz that lets you test your knowledge of automobile trivia. And you'll be amused by the light-hearted yet level-headed treatment of such topics as 'The Ten Worst Cars of the Millennium' and the dangers of driving and talking on the phone. The widely syndicated 'Dear Tom & Ray' column is also here, and the 'Cars for Sale' will keep list lovers occupied for hours. The home page has a clean, uncluttered look with cartoons identifying the various sections.

Dangerous Places: Planning a visit to any of these countries: Brazil, Mexico, the Phillippines, Sri Lanka? Then you had better arm youself with some useful knowledge on the risks you may face by spending some time at this site. So far, 31 places are listed on the main page, and when you click on a particular country, you get a pageful of cautionary information and access to links like 'Getting In', 'Getting Around', 'Dangerous Things' and 'Dangerous Days'. Actually, you'd already have an idea that travelling in places like Afghanistan, Albania, Cambodia, Israel, Myanmar, Somalia and Uganda is not going to be safe. But the big surprise is the inclusion of the United States of America on the list. "Land of the free and home of the brave. And you'd better be damned brave here, because people are free to do pretty much anything they like." That's the ominous introduction you get to the well-written, stats-filled essay in the US, and that witty tone is maintained in all the other articles.

Earth From Space: Interested in "astronauts' views of the home planet" without actually being on a spaceship? Then dig into the database of images illustrating "Earth features and processes" at this site. The selections, taken from the Nasa Space Shuttle Earth Observations photo bank, come in multiple resolutions with captions to help you identify the locations. You can search by choosing links like 'Clickable Map', 'Cities', 'Earth Landscapes', 'Earth-Human Interactions', 'Hurricanes & Weather' and 'Earth's Water Habits'. Choices of detailed locations are somewhat limited but generally you get to see most parts of the globe. And as the titles of the links above indicate, the resource material featured here will be a great aid to anyone studying geography. Load time may vary depending on how fast your connection is, but generally the images download smoothly.

Tehelka.com: This is the site that's currently shaking things up in Indian politics and it really lives up to its promise of dishing out "views, news and all the juice". The corruption in high places it has been exposing is still the main attraction, especially the videoclips that allegedly show senior government officials accepting bribes. But there's a lot more than scandal-mongering and sensationalism on offer here. With short and snappy articles on everything from sports (lots of up-to-date cricket reports), and the arts (interviews, reviews and features on the new breed of Indian writers in English) to entertainment (plenty of Bollywood gossip), ecology and health, this really has the kind of broad reach of most of the better Web-savvy news sites. And despite the seriousness of the issues covered, many of the stories are imbued with a welcome sense of humour, including the bribery scandal expose that has made this one of the hottest sites of the moment. The design is very surfer-friendly, and while loading can be slow because of the heavy traffic it's been attracting, the content is often worth the wait.
