The next major landmark is the Anglers
Tavern. This is one of several good places on this stretch of the river providing refreshment of one sort or another.
The Anglers Tavern has a bistro and beer garden with
river views.
|
There's also
a boat landing and popular fishing platform on the river,
where the most common catch seems to be bream.
|
|
On 25 October 2000, after heavy
rainfalls, the Maribyrnong was on the verge of bursting
its banks at the Anglers, as it had done on many previous occasions. Staff pulled up the carpets and
moved all the equipment upstairs in readiness for the
deluge. |
|
This time however, the water
lapped menacingly at the top
of the river bank but did not flood the building. Click here for some more pictures
of the Maribyrnong in flood. |
Continuing the walk, we
can take a narrow path round the riverbank side of the
building, or cross the road to a footpath. Both lead
towards the sealed walkers / cyclists' path going underneath
the Maribyrnong Road bridge. |
We could also shorten the circuit walk here
by crossing the bridge and returning to the picnic ground
via the path on the other side of the river. The Maribyrnong Road
bridge can be seen here to the left of the Anglers Tavern.

Emerging from under the
Maribyrnong Road bridge, a pleasant view opens up across
the river, with houses and gardens lining the river bank
on the Ascot Vale side. At left is a close-up view of one of the
houses. |
The pictures below show
the group of houses before and after the new apartments on the right were
built during 2000-2001. |

The path
we're on now is traversing an open reserve with scattered
trees, but soon moves close to the road as the reserve
narrows to a footpath-size strip. This is the least
attractive section of the walk, with traffic and a
crumbling concrete embankment to our right and a litter
trap (usually full of litter) in the river to our left. |
