The
paved path gives way to a rougher unsealed track towards
the bottom of the hill, and the track is now unpaved for
the rest of the way. It is mostly a fine sort of sandy
gravel which makes for pleasant walking. |
Here we look back across Steele Creek Reserve to the
hill - on the top of which is Lily Street park. |
|
Crossing
the valley floor, we can see several old dead trees.
Those close to the river will often have a few cormorants
perched on them. |
|
Further back in the grasslands, a
number of black-shouldered kites can usually be seen on
the very top branches, or hovering over the grasslands in
search of prey. |
Sometimes
a white-faced heron can be found stalking slowly through
the grasslands in search of insects.
We have a
choice now, either to ascend to Avondale Heights and walk
above the river, or to take the riverside path along the
valley floor. On this virtual walk, we'll head for
Avondale Heights initially, returning by way of the riverside
path.

So up another
hill we go, taking in the views of the river below ...
|
|
|
... the
city skyline in the distance ... |
... and the tussock grass at our
feet. |
