Shield Bug - Austromalaya reticulatus

Family Pentatomidae

This page contains pictures and information about Shield Bugs in genera Austromalaya that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.

Body length 20mm

We found this bug once in Karawatha Forest during mid summer. It was resting on a burnt tree trunk. We thought this was a shield bug species that we commonly saw. We found out it was not so common when we looked at the pictures at home. This shield bug looks very similar to the Gum Tree Shield Bug Poecilometis acanthopygius, which is common in Brisbane Eucalyptus forest.

Because those difference species of Shield Bugs look so similar and live in the same environments, we believe they may have form a Mullerian mimicry complex.

This Stink Bug was also found in Wishart near the Bulimba Creek during early summer.
