        Soap

Scrub-brush on my feet and ankles
Scrub-brush on my elbows and neck
Washcloth grazing into my skin
Making me sore and red all over.
I still hate the smell of Ivory soap.

Pulling hair tight and back
Braided so tight it hurts
Forcing comb through the tangles
Until tears float in my eyes.
I'm always gentle with my hair.

Toothbrush used to scrub the floors
Coated with Ivory soap
Forced into my mouth
Brushed up and down.
I only use toothpaste that doesn't foam.

Never swear or say bad words
Never talk back
Never scream or yell too loud
The taste of soap fills my mouth.
Now my voice is mine.
