Dear Woman.

Yesterday, we celebrated “womens’ day”. It was a nice way to pay tribute to the other half, huh? Here are some more thoughts to let you know exactly how much we appreciate you.

Women’s day is your day. By the sheer definition, the other 364 days are not. To put it more clearly, they are men’s days. I hope you appreciate our ideals of fair play there. We care.

On this day, each year, we promise to put you on a pedestal. Write about you. Invite you onto TV shows and even let you have the spotlight. Just don’t let it go to your head, ok? After all there are still all those dishes to be washed and the kids to put to sleep afterward. Lets not get into an argument. You know how I hate missing the nine o’clock news…

Incidentally, one out of 4 women in some studies on women’s abuse admit to being verbally abused. But don’t let that bother you. Sticks and stones may break your bones… but words can never hurt you right? Surely years and years of directed verbal battering is not all that bad for all that we give you? We give you homes and food, right? What’s a little self esteem for a lifetime of food and clothing? In addition, we will be sensitive and kind to you in public. It is only in the shelter of our homes, that we will turn our wrath on you. OK, may be not on women’s days.

At bars and pubs we will stare at you. At your body. We will brush past. Touch. If you act surprised or shocked we will laugh and make a sexual comment. To our buddies who will laugh uproariously. But every year, on women’s day, we promise to curtail all of these activities.

In fact we care so much that in many places in the world, like Namibia, we are planning multimedia campaigns to prevent injustice (rape and violence) to women. It is important to us. We are discussing it in parliament. Doesn’t that make you feel wanted and important? You’re very high on the agenda in most places. Just before the save the turtle campaign on my list at least.

In Afghanistan, we will stone you if any part of your body is uncovered. In Mumbai, we will curse you if some part of your body is not. In Nepal we will kidnap you and sell you to brothels. In Pakistan, every 3 hours a woman will be raped. But if it is women’s day, we will cherish you for the day. We will desist from most of these activities. At least those of us who hear about women’s day will.

In Short, for a day in the year, we are prepared to accept you as humans.

Have a nice year.

Man.
