Tendring District Council's administrative area covers around 130 square miles of NE Essex. It includes 38 miles of varying coastline, and embraces a population in the region of 138,555 people. |
The Tendring District Council is an administrative body, which is responsible for the historic area of Tendring Hundred, lying in the north east of the county of Essex. |

The Tendring District extends from Brightlingsea (on the estuary of the river Colne) in the north west to the port of Harwich on the river Stour) in the north east; and from Manningtree (on the river Stour) in the north to Clacton-on-Sea in the south. |

On the coast are also the small seaside towns of Dovercourt Bay (mentioned in the Domesday Book in the 11th century), Walton-on-the-Naze, and Frinton-on-Sea each with its distinctive character and attractive beaches. |

A regular sight are the old Thames barges sailing in the Stour Estuary. These used to carry cargoes to and from London and East Anglia. |

On the river Colne, to the north west, lies Colchester, the oldest recorded town in Britain and named Camolodunum by the Romans. To the north east lies Ipswich on the river Orwell, in the county of Suffolk. Nearby are the beauty spots of Dedham and Flatford, home to the 18th century artist, John Constable, famous for his English landscapes. |

Tendring Hundred is just 70 miles from Britain's capital, London, some 45 miles from the county own of Chelmsford, 60 miles from the historic university town of Cambridge, and some 80 miles from the cathedral city of Norwich, the county town of Norfolk. All can be easily reached by road or rail. |
