Wow, hard to remember a time when it was difficult to find good genfic! 'Round about April 2004, I realized that there wasn't any good way to do it, so I started up the recs list. It's not being updated currently, but all of the fics on this list are still up.
If you're just starting out and want to feel your way around, parallactic has a very nice informal guide to genfic here, including many archives and canon resources for potential writers.
You may see a few unfamiliar terms while you're browsing the recs. Pure gen refers to fics with no romance whatsoever. At the most, you might see someone who happens to be married. If a fic has no warnings, you can consider it to be pure gen. Mostly gen refers to fics that (duh!) have a little bit of romance. There might be some crushes and flirting, or even a kiss or two, but that's all you'll see, and it won't be the focus of the fic. Borderline gen fics have many different elements, one of which is romance. Since these fics are usually not shippy, however, they're gen enough for me. Feel free to disagree, of course; if I consider a fic to be borderline gen, I always mention it in the fic's blurb, and you can steer clear of those if you like.
