Sustainable Living means making a conscious effort to reduce our impact on the environment in our daily actions. Grey water from the kitchen sink, washing machines and wash basins are nutrient-rich and need to be treated before releasing into the waterways to reduce its impact on the ecology of the waterways. We can do our part by designing a simple system like the example here at the SLC, and convert these into healthy fruits and food for the family.

Wastewater management using a "grey" water garden

Sustainable Living includes designing a water system which traps rain water for domestic use, recycle grey household water and treating black water on site. At the SLC, provision has been made to treat household sewage on site in the future and to process the treated water via a mini wetland system using aquatic plants and bilogical filter beds to remove nutrients. An UV lamp can be installed in the future to make the water potable without the use of chemicals like chlorine.

Filtration of domestic waste water through mechanical and biological filters to recycle the water. The system also produces table fish for the family..

Water resources are precious. Reduce the amount you use. Then reuse that as many times as possible before it disappears down the drains. You can begin the process by installing a simple rain water collecting system.

Cautionary Note Some detergents and soaps are damaging to you and to the environment, and may even be toxic to plants, the soil, and aquatic life.  If you are not sure, use natural soaps or biodegradable soaps and detergents. Read the labels.

Never pour cooking oil down the sink.  It will pollute the waterways, and affect your grey water garden.  An option is to pour it into a small sand-filled hole in the garden.
