A
painter, art advocate, educator and activist, Ionis Bracy Martin is a co-founder
of the Artists Collective, an incorporator of the Hartford Art School at the
University of Hartford and a co-trustee of the Ella Burr McManus Trust.
In addition, she was a trustee of the Wadsworth Atheneum for eighteen
years. Martin attended Chicago
public schools and classes at the Art Institute of Chicago.
She majored in art at Fisk University, where she studied with Aaron
Douglas. She also studied at the University of Hartford (med) and
Pratt Institute (MA). In 1994, she
was a Fellow at Harvard's W.E.B. Dubois Institute.
A teacher, first in Hartford and later, Bloomfield public schools for 40
years. Influenced by the Impressionist painters of the 19th century and the Expressionist painters of the 20th century, Ms. Martin applies paint in broad, thick strokes at times with a palette knife and at other times with a brush. The paintings selected for this project is a part of a series she completed in memory of her sister, Anita, who died from breast cancer. There are four paintings in the series and they all have flowers, as subjects, to symbolize how delicate life can be. The series is also about Martin's beliefs and feelings about the connectedness and continuity of all life forms. (Ms Martin's second image will be inserted soon.) |
