Cora Marshall, born in Washington, DC, is an artist, educator, and scholar. She received her B.F.A. in 1971 from Howard University with a major in art and a minor in education.  After teaching art in the Alexandria Virginia City Schools for many years, she returned to school and earned a Master of Science in Education from Bank Street College of Education with Parsons School of Design and her doctorate in art from New York University.  Currently, Dr. Marshall is an associate professor of art at Central Connecticut State University.   Dr. Marshall is presently, working in and across the medium of painting, photography, and video.

For this project, Marshall has selected artwork from her mixed-media painting series, Spirit Guides, Shape Shifters, and Holy Things. In this series she investigates the language of art that exteriorize the spirituality of the past––the language that reveals, clarifies, and celebrates the imprints and lessons that are the gifts from our ancestry.  The mixed-media works are paintings that contain double exposed photographs of spiritually centered artists, including herself, with their work.  The photographs spill over onto the canvas to reveal previously unsuspected imagery––providing insight into the art of making meaning.
