On
August 7, 2004 the Pelham Sparrows were able to win their 2nd BFL
championship in 3 years with a 61-45 victory over the Congress Bulldogs.
Ken, with the win improved his record in the BFL Bowl to 4-0 and
is currently the only team to win multiple championships.
The
Sparrows and Bulldogs had similar seasons. Both team lost their
first game of the season to solid teams. Ken was defeated by the
Black Knights while Andrew lost to the Express. Each team needed
turn up their game to win out to make it to the 2004 post season.
And that is what these two teams did. The Sparrows handed the Gamblers
their largest loss ever with a 33 point victory and then crushed
the Sea Raiders by 30. The Bulldogs beat the Fear 52-50 and then
clinched their first playoff spot by destroying the Produce.
The
two teams had to play in wild card games to advance to the semi
finals. In the Sparrows game against the Crusaders, his 18 point
lead slowly dwindled but Ken made a defensive bat down on the final
play, to continue his season. Then he had a rematch with the Black
Knights. This time, the Sparrows were able to hold on for the win,
55-48.
In
the Bulldogs first ever playoff game, they had to beat the mighty
Gamblers. Needing a stop to hang on to his 1 point lead, Mark missed
a 3rd and 1 pass to give the Bulldogs a 53-52 win. Then the Bulldogs
had to face the undefeated Sand Storm. As time ran down, the Bulldogs
caught the game winning barnburner over the hands of Charlie to
clinch his first BFL Bowl appearance.
In
BFL Bowl VII, the Sparrows and Bulldogs each came ready to play.
It was a chilly day in August, with temperatures in the 60s. The
two teams matched scores, completing nearly ever pass that Howie
threw. The Half ended tied at 31-31.
With
the ball and a chance to take their first lead of the game, the
Bulldogs missed on a 2nd down play as Ken intercepted a pass in
the endzone. Soon, Ken would go up by 9, 40-31. The rest of the
game was dominated by the Sparrows defense. The Bulldogs began having
trouble catching the short pass as Ken's defense came up with 2
defensive stops. Late in the game, the Sparrows took a demanding
23 point lead, 61-38.
The
Sparrows were able to hang on to win it over the Bulldogs 61-45
in a classic BFL Bowl. The Bulldogs and Sparrows battled on every
play, but this game came down to defense, in the end.
