August
3, 2001- The Black Knights and Dragons would meet in BFL Bowl IV.
And the Black Knights cruised into this game with and undefeated
season and a playoff win over the Gamblers. In his 2nd straight
trip to the BFL Bowl, John was set to bring home his second trophy
in 2 years.
The
Dragons came into the game defeating the undefeated Sparrows in
the playoffs and would attempt to win his first BFL Bowl in his
3rd attempt. However, to win it, Rich would have to over come the
Black Knights, at team that Rich was 0-3 against lifetime!
The
stage was set, the field was painted and it was a gorgeous evening
for football. With two of the most balanced teams in the league
going at it, the game saw some strong defense early on. Both teams
had to shake off the jitters as the game was 3-3 early on. But,
soon the game opened up for some phenomenal catches. The two teams
each began exchanging touchdowns lead by quarterback Howie "Gogo"
and his arm.
With
the score tied at 24, the Black Knights moved the ball to the goal
line. John would manage to take a 31-24 lead into the half with
a last second touchdown.
At
the half, Jason of the Melody was honored with the 2001 MVP "Gogo"
award.
To
begin the third, the two teams came out with much more intensity.
The Dragons would tie the score up on a long completion from Howie
Gogo.
The
trend continued as neither defense could stop the opposing offense
from scoring. It would have to come down to a mistake. Late in the
4th, the Dragons were about to tie the score up at 49 when Rich
dropped the extra point. However, the with a two point conversion
later on, the Dragons and Black Knights would remain tied as regulation
expired and the score 66-66 sending the 2nd straight BFL Bowl to
OT.
In
overtime, both teams picked up their defense. The two teams both
batted down ball after ball. And neither team would score on their
first possession, sending the game into double overtime. John would
soon take a lead of 2 with a quick 2 play drive, 68-66.
The
Dragons then went into the endzone and caught a 3 pointer over the
diving arms of John to win his first ever BFL Championship, 69-68
in double overtimeThe Dragons won their first BFL Bowl in 3 attempts
and defeated the Black Knights for the first time in their history
in one of the closest games in BFL history!
