Our main objective of doing this survey is to gather information from
people living in Singapore and analyse the data they provided us with.
We have conducted a survey among 300 over people living in various parts of
Singapore, coming from different walks of life and having an individual
responsibility in contributing to the society. We have conducted this survey
by means of survey forms, electronic mail (e-mail) survey forms, telephone
calls and oral interviews. Below are the questions which appeared on the
survey forms and our analysis on the results that we have gotten.
Overall Conclusion
As we have said earlier on that
our main objective of doing this survey is to gather information from
people living in Singapore and analyse the data they provided us with,
We conclude that Singapore is infamous for being a food paradise. Most
Singaporeans acknowledged the fact that Singapore is a "Food Haven" and
were able to supply us with substantial prove.
Furthermore, from the attitude of Singaporeans reflected on the survey
towards "Food", you can see that we live to eat and not eat to live!
Singapore is a country which places a lot of emphasis on food and we must
make use of this point to investigate more on "Food in Singapore".
Q1. What is your favourite food?
The answers are so wide and varied that it is rather impossible to find a
pattern among them. This does not only show that we have our own unique
preferences towards the food that we like, but it also portrays the wide
variety of food that Singapore has to offer. Each food has a distinctive
characteristic resulting in our preferences towards various foods.

Q2. Why do you like the food so much?
The majority like the food because to its taste. The minority mentioned about
the price of the food. Surprisingly, some wrote that they didn't know why
they liked that particular food so much. This slightly reflects the hectic
life of Singaporeans. There are people who are so devoted to their work
that they neglected the fact that they have to eat. This is why they do not
really care about what they eat, thus resulting in the 'nil' reply.

Q3. Where can you find it?
The answers to this question is also varied. Answers include places ranging
from homes to restaurants. Some people even gave the exact name of the stall
including the address and we could see that they were either hoping that we
would feature that place at our website or they were simply engrossed while
answering this question.

Q4. Do you look for new food outlets? If so, why?
For this question, it is more of a 50-50 answer. Some people said that they
have no time to look for new food outlets and this draws us back to the
fact that Singaporeans are workaholics. Those who look for new food outlets
do it out of interest. The fact that we are busy is just a mere excuse to
isolate the topic on "Finding new food outlets".

Q5. Do you try out new types of food? e.g.
The more shocking answers were a big "NO". This sort of people simply don't
show interest in food and I must really thank them for their time and effort
put into filling up the survey form. Most of them wrote "yes" as their reply
but did not give examples. It might be difficult to think of new types of
food that we have tried because the food that we eat everyday isn't the same
and to a certain extent we can say that we are trying out new types of food.
Ever tried stepping into a food centre and then going to a stall which you
hadn't visited before? Though you might say that it is the same dish, the
ingredients might be slightly different. With this, wouldn't you be trying
out a new type of food?

Q6. Do you eat food from other ethnic groups? If so, why?
Many Singaporeans (85%) do indeed venture to try foods from other ethnic groups
as they find them rather tasty and do appreciate the change in taste and
flavour occasionally. However, some people (15%) do not attempt to try foods from
other ethnic groups as they are contented with the food that can be found
in their own ethnic groups or due to religious reasons.
(My comment:
People who do not even attempt to try foods from other ethnic groups other
than because of religious restrictions are probably greenhorns, especially
if they have the impression that foods from the other ethnic groups taste
horrible. So if you are one, it is time for you to crawl out of that shell
you have been hiding in and be more sporting and positive! No offence, the
above is just a friendly advise!!)

Q7. What food in your opinion is Singapore popular for? Why?
Hence, from the above graph, we can conclude that pepper-crab is the most
popular food in the opinion of most Singaporeans. Most probably it is
because of its unique aromatic and spicy
flavour, which tantalises everyone's taste buds. Most importantly, it is
a Singaporean creation. Hainanese Chicken Rice is
the placed second. We must understand that not only is it
economical and easily found, it has a great taste too!! For the case of
Hainanese Chicken Rice, some even said that is was because celebrities
always eat this dish when they come to Singapore. Foods from different
racial groups such as rojak, mee-goreng and roti-prata are are also not to
be neglected as Singapore is a multi-racial society
where people enjoy food from all ethnic groups. The food under the category
'Others' refers to those who decline to answer.

Q8. Do you consider Singapore as a food haven?
Most people's answer to this question is yes as they feel that one cannot
find such a wide and delicious variety of foods overseas. However there are
some who disagree with this as they feel that the foods found in
Singapore are not original enough. Some also feel that places like Hong Kong
and China provide a wider variety and more authentic foods.
From the above, we can see that most Singaporeans do recognise the
fact that so many kinds of foods can be found in Singapore.
(My comment: I disagree with those who feel that the foods sold in Singapore
cannot equal those sold in countries like China and Hong Kong. These places
only cater for the needs of one race unlike the wide variety foods found in
Singapore, which satisfies the appetites of all ethnic groups. Moreover,
accounting for the lack of originality, I really do not reckon this is so
as there are original Singapore foods such as the well liked 'Roti Prata',
'Satay' and many others. You can definitely not find such foods abroad.)

Q9. Do you know any locations in Singapore that sell queer foods
(e.g.Fried worms)? If so, where?
We weren't too ambitious to expect full "Yes" replies. We found no harm in
including this question into the survey as the whole purpose of this project
was for us to share ideas and gather them together to display them in our
final product which was the section on 'Queer Food'.
