Though the majority of the population in Singapore consist of Chinese, Malays
and Indians, we do not consume only Chinese, Malay and Indian food.
Singapore is a well-known comsmopolitan country and this can be seen from the
wide variety of food available at the food centres. These foods include:
Thai, Japanese, Italian, French, Portugese, German, American, African,
Mexican, Spanish, Russian, Swiss, Dutch and many more. Among these types of
foods, we have chosen to elaborate more on Italian, Japanese and Thailand food.
Some people believe that any departure from the way things have been done for centuries are defined as authencity. On the contrary, Italian cuisine is a living art, influenced by historical events, popular trends and introductions to new foods. History had proven that where there is a great civilization, there is a great cuisine. Italy's first known inhabitants, the
Etruscans, had a highly artistic and developed culture, amazingly advanced in agriculture. Over that are layers of influence from invading people, including the Romans, Goths and French. Thus, the Haling way of eating is definitely much more than a sensible "diet"; it is a way of life.
Most Japanese cuisine is seasoned only lightly and strong spices are rarely used. Although this may seem bland to a Western plate, the Japanese believe this allows the true flavours of the foods to emerge. This is why Japanese
food tastes so exquisite and alluring to the taste buds. Moreover, Japanese cuisine is also very popular amongst the health-conscious people simply because of its nutritious ingredients: fish, vegetable seaweed and soy bean products. Even when it comes to stock, while Western cuisine uses meat bouillon, Japanese dashi consists only of dried fish and seaweed. In conclusion, I would like to say that Japanese food is especially good for those concerned about their weight, their heart or their cholesterol levels. In addition, Singapore offers a wide range of Japanese food, from sushis to tempuras.
Thai cooking is a source of pride and wonder. A Thai cook will always strive for a balance of flavour, texture and colour in a dish. Presentation varies from simple plastic bowls at pavement stalls to intricately designed china and artistic displays in finer restaurants, but the complexity
of their culinary magic is constant. Hence Thai cuisine is light and fresh with delicately balanced spices and a harmony of flavours, colours and textures designed to appeal to both the eyes and mouth.
