Rooftop Cowboys

CB's Gallery.

They have a pleasant mix of light rock, jazz, a bit of Latin and country. There were clear moments where the rock influence is reminiscent of the 50's, although there was a huge Rusted Root influence shining through in a few of their songs (in particular, Lost in a Wood reminds me of Rusted Root's Send Me on My Way, however Rooftop Cowboys' beat is more subtle).

The individual musicians are great talents. The saxophone player picks up his clarinet once in a while and plays both well and with a flair. The drummer plays drums well and plays the cowbell with his free foot. The bassist is independant, he doesn't simply follow along with the drums, but goes off into his own beat.

This band will make you want to dance, but not thrash or lose control. It's great music for hanging out at the bar or as a CD playing while doing other things around the house.

Rating: A somewhat mellow band with meaningful lyrics, way-cool horns and a funky beat.

The Boys:

Seth Ginsberg: Guitar, vocals.
Seth Goldberg: Drums. Special kudos for playing the cowbell with one foot while the rest of him plays drums in the ordinary way.
Paul Leschen: Keyboards.
Howard Freund: Soprano saxophone, tenor, clarinet. He shifts from foot to foot like a young boy.
Rob Collins: Trombone.
Zak Borovay: Bass.

Rooftop Cowboys tip of the month: Listen to Slide On, describing a yearning for a lost love in the form on noticing cigarette butts on the sidewalk. Great poetry and unique expression of heartache.

Favorite Rooftop Cowboys sound: Slide On
