OK, I have a confession to make. I'm biased towards this band. They were the first band I saw after holing myself up in my room for a year and a half. I was in a rut, a depression, caught in a strangle-hold relationship and hadn't seen the light of day for quite some time. The first time I went out after living in the crap that was my life, I saw Hair of the Dog. I had fun. I kept going out. I live again.

Hair of the Dog was once known as a heavy metal band, but they now play all-covers (at least, in Brooklyn). They don't add any unique sound to the covers nor have I ever ever heard an original song. They play today's pop songs with a few 80's Pat Benetar-type songs thrown in for good measure. What makes them worth a consideration of seeing is the personality of the band and the voice of the lead singer (and the crowd that follows them definitely adds to the comfortable, homey atmosphere). The lead singer, Jackie, is hysterically funny and has one hell of a kick-ass voice: very gratey and rough, typical of an x-heavy metal singer. If you hang around for the breaks or are at the bar before they go on, you'll find her very approachable and an interesting conversationalist to boot. She'll chew your ear off with stories of her broken up all-girl band - Miss Demeanors.

The band has recently added a new singer, Lori. In contrast to Jackie's voice, she has an extremely feminine, blues voice. It's a voice men would die to hear in the bedroom. It's worth the trip to Brooklyn if only to hear her sing Tracy Chapman's Give Me One Reason.

The band plays at the Snook Inn on 86th + 4th every other Friday starting May 1rst. Good crowd, great bartendars, familiar music. It's like home.

Rating: See them at least once. Especially if you need a pick-me-up.

The Players:
Jackie: Lead singer.
Lori: Co-singer. Wait for her to sing Give Me One Reason before you leave to another bar for another band.
Joe: Lead guitarist.
Eddie: Bass guitarist. There's no room for this guy to move, but he sways anyway. Poor guy - he has to move out of the way every time someone has to go to the bathroom :-(
Andrew: Drummer. Watch him. He plays with a huge grin. He's having fun, I can just tell!
