Talus
Cone Wall |
Most
of Shastina's slopes appear to be made of countless tons of shattered
rock or talus. These talus fields pose extra difficulty to ascend
when not covered with consolidated snow. During late summer and
early fall, climbs up Cascade Gulch have to deal with crossing expansive
areas of this unstable rock mix. Use of trekking poles can help
for balancing on steep shifting slopes. Here the view is up the
main cone of Shastina looking south from about 10,500 feet elevation. |
