--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. I'm a new lyc, what should I do first?
The first thing to do is to read through the help pages. The "toothhelp" command contains a lot of essential information about the basics of the guild. Also, there is a book in the guild containing entries from lots of high level lycs describing things you should know. Read as much as you can so you can avoid asking simple questions. The other members of the guild will be quite impressed if you don't have to ask about the simplest things. Back to top

2. Should I fight in human or were form?
It depends. Usually it is quite difficult to get much form armor or weapon power at very low levels (1 through 3). It might be easier just to use a sword to kill some wimpy creatures. You can still use rage, so this will help you. Other than very low levels, I recommend using were forms to fight whenever you have some weapon and armor power. This allows you to fight better (generally) and earn guild experience. Back to top

3. What is guild level (glvl) and guild experience (gxp)? How does it work?
The guild level (glvl) is just that: a level within the guild. It defines how high you are in the guild. You must reach a minimum guild level to use each form, and moving up in forms generally increases your combat ability. Guild experience is what you must earn to advance your guild level.

Your guild level increases as you gain more guild experience (gxp). You gain gxp by using any lyc ability: sacrificing items, raging, regenerating, changing into form, etc. You can see how much more gxp you need to raise your glvl by using the "status" command. Back to top

4. How can I gain gxp effectively? Why am I capped from raising more gxp?
The most effective way of raising gxp is to use lyc powers as much as possible. Specifically, use rage and regenerate as much as you can. These continuous powers raise gxp most efficiently. You can also earn gxp by sacrificing items or money at the guild altar.

Your guild level will become capped (unable to increase) when you reach the maximum glvl for your current regular level. In order to start raising gxp again, you will have to gain a regular level first. There is a chart available that shows the level/guild level relationship.

5. What is shadowself (sself)? How can I make my sself recover faster? How can I make my forms last longer?
The official description of shadowself (sself) doesn't really explain what it means. It is simply a counter that controls how often a lyc form can be used. The lower level a form is, the less sself it costs, and thus the more frequently it can be used. Naturally, the higher forms are better in combat, but cost more.

The whole key to playing effectively as a lyc is managing this sself. There is nothing that can be done to make sself recover faster; it rebuilds at a constant rate for all players. However, raising con can make each form last longer, which means you can get more out of each one you use. (This is really the same as making sself go up faster, by getting "more for your money".)

There is a maximum limit on how long a form can last, so once this is reached, no amount of con raising will make your forms last any longer. What you then must concentrate on doing is choosing when to activate a form so that you can get the most out of it while it lasts. With practice, you can become very good at estimating how much you can accomplish within one form's time, and can plan effective times and places to use them. Back to top

6. What is the moon phase? What effect does it have?
The moon on MS follows the real moon. (Check it out sometime, when it's full on MS it's full in real life.) The moon phase has a different effect for different phases. For example, when it is nearly full, you will be able to dodge more hits in battle. When the moon is nearly new, the cost of spells is lessened. The degree to which it affects you depends on which form you use. Some forms are strongly affected, while others are not. Each form also has a moonphase for which it receives a bonus shard for its weapon power. This allows that form to do more damage for as long as it is in harmony with the moon. Back to top

7. I'm terrible at quests, what should I do? I hate questing. Is there any way to get around it?
No. Quests are an essential part of Midnight Sun, and it is virtually impossible to advance to any decent level without solving some of them.

Solving a quest is generally a difficult process. It requires finding where the quest is, figuring out what to do to get started, and following the clues to reach the conclusion. Some are better written than others, and thus are easier to figure out because it is more intuitively obvious what to do next. Generally, you want to solve the low quests (the first 10 to 15 or so in the quest book) as soon as possible. Doing so usually results in being able to raise several stats at low levels. All I can say is, hang in there and keep trying. Back to top

8. I keep dying! What am I doing wrong?
Death is inevitable as a new player. Even an experienced player may die when getting used to a new guild. Here are some guidelines:

New players
Turn on your wimpy setting and direction. Set your wimpy to very high. Before attacking a monster, set your wimpy direction to a safe room in case you have to run from the battle.

Be cautious when fighting a monster for the first time.
Look at the monster. If its decription sounds dangerous, chances are it is. Use the check command on it to get a rough idea of its combat power. Also, try using the compare command to see how its stats stack up to yours.

Fight monsters you know you can handle. If a monster keeps kicking you around, chances are it's too tough for you. If you find yourself wimpying away quickly and often, you should probably take that as a hint to move on to something easier.

Experienced players new to the guild
Start slowly. The basic premise of lycs is different from all other guilds. Don't assume that just because you've played in other guilds that you will immediately be as good in lycs. It takes some getting used to. Start by killing some things that are far below what you would usually attack, just to get the hang of things.

Stand and fight. Lycs can't use hit and run tactics effectively like some other guilds. You have to stand in there and go toe to toe with monsters. Use rage and regenerate to increase your combat effectiveness. (This is also one of the best ways to raise your guild level.) Chances are, your guild level is pretty low compared to your regular level, so you want to raise it as fast as possible, and this will help.

Team up with an experienced lyc. See if another lyc will fight with you. It will help to have another experienced player to guide you a bit, and suggest strategies for taking down monsters. You can follow his/her lead to learn how to maximize your new abilities.

Hang in there. Because the lyc guild is so much different from the others, you might get a little frustrated. It takes some adjustment to get used to the new abilities. It is not too difficult to raise gxp in the lower levels, so if you just stick it out you will move up to more powerful forms without too much trouble. Back to top

9. I can never seem to find many of the top shard weapons to sacrifice. Is there some trick to getting them?
Most of the top shard sacrifice weapons are unique or rare, which means they aren't always in even if their monsters are. The good news is, they generally aren't in use by other players. Most of the time, they are "blocked" from resetting by the unique/rare system MS uses.
The unique system takes into account how recently a given unique has been available. This effectively means that there are only a certain number of times a given unique can be expected to appear during any given boot cycle. Predicting a unique's chances of appearance at any given time is a difficult prospect. The best you can do is to check on a variety of good potential sacs throughout your session to try to catch one when it appears. However, it is not possible to guarantee a large supply of unique weapon sac power.
The rare system is a bit easier, but still unpredictable. There are only a limited number of a rare item that can be in, and even if they aren't all in use they aren't always on the holding monster. Back to top

10. What are the consequences if I leave the guild?
Most people are curious about other guilds, and contemplate leaving the lycs to try others at some point. As with leaving any guild, you will be subject to losing some experience if you do (unless you are level 5 or under). You will also lose some of the guild experience you have gained. If you come back at a later date, you will still have some, but not as much as when you left. The difficulty of regaining it depends on what guild level you are, and rises significantly the higher level you are. In other words, you stand to lose more of your progress in the guild by leaving at higher levels rather than lower ones. Becasue of this, it is generally better to do guild exploring at lower levels. 11. What exactly is a "nachtkinder"? How can I reach this form?
"Nachtkinder" is a German word that roughly translates to "child of the night". In terms of the lyc guild, it is the most powerful form.
It takes a huge commitment of time and effort to reach this form. It requires reaching guild level 33, which is an extremely difficult and long process. You must be level 19 in order to gain guild experience towards it, and the amout needed to get there from dragon form (28), is incredibly high. The only thing you can do is to rage/regen as much as possible to gain gxp, as well as sacrificing as much money and as many items as you can to boost your gxp gaining rate. Even doing all this it will take many months to go from 28 to 33.

It sounds impossible, and in truth it is only possible if you are totally committed to reaching it. The power gained from achieving this goal, though, is far beyond that of any other form. It is the closest thing to becoming a one-man army that is possible in the lyc guild.

12. How can I help someone join the guild?
You can use a command to take the player directly there by doing 'bless player with blood'. This has an interesting effect on the player, then transports the player directly to the guild's front door if they type 'surrender'. Back to top

13. Are there any other places to look for answers to lyc-related questions?
There is a book of lyc-related info in the guild, which you can find southeast of the main altar. This is written and updated by the lyc lords, so it will contain some good things to know. Every lyc should read this book, and check it periodically for additions. Back to top

14. Hey, why don't I see the answer to my question here?
Because I'm not a mind reader. If you have a question you think should be answered here, you can send it to me. Keep in mind that this is supposed to be a lyc-specific FAQ, and therefore will not contain general questions about how the mud or other guilds work. For general mud information, You can always check the official Midnight Sun page. Back to top
