around the country including RSPB and National Trust Groups and
Photographic Societies. All lectures include an interval for
tea/coffee although this can be removed upon request and all
timings are approximate. Fee for 2002 will be £55 plus
expenses. We can provide all our own equipment but would welcome
the use of local facilities where they exist.
MAN and BIRDS - travels through
time |
This
popular talk takes us back in time drawing on visits to Egypt
and China. We go back some 3000 years BC for our first look at
man's association with birds depicted in some amazing tomb
paintings , moving rapidly through to the 17th and 19th
centuries and the resulting changes in land use. Finally we look
at the changes in our relationship and appreciation of birds
over the last 100 years or so using sites in the UK, Gambia, the
Pyrenees and Antarctica as examples. Duration - 80 -90 minutes,
cannot be reduced.
A most
popular talk with all audience types, based on many separate
weeks as volunteer wardens at the famous RSPB Scottish reserve
at Loch Garten, in the shadow of the Cairngorms. This talk tells
the history, changes and developing story, through a typical
volunteers week, of the ospreys returning to Scotland as a
breeding bird, the protection they have been afforded, some of
the conservation issues surrounding them plus some of the
beautiful habitats, scenery and wildlife within striking
distance of the reserve. Duration - 75 minutes.
GALAPAGOS - The Enchanted Isles |
We begin
this tour in Quito the capital of Ecuador before flying west
into the Pacific to the amazing Galapagos Islands. Frigatebirds,
boobies, seals and sea lions, iguanas, tortoises, turtles,
Darwin’s finches plus many other species are found on these
unique islands. A location that holds such fascination for most
with an interest in wildlife is breathtakingly brought to life
through nearly 300 colour slides. Duration - 80 minutes.
Five days
in Argentina at the Iguazu Falls and the Costernera Sur Reserve
in Buenos Aires form the prelude to an adventure that has to be
one of life's greatest wildlife experiences - cruising from the
Falklands to the Antarctic Peninsular over Christmas and New
Year. The spectacular scenery of Iguazu, the large variety of
birds at Costernera Sur wet your appetite before confronting a
large and completely new variety of birds - six species of
penguin, albatrosses, petrels etc. This journey also includes
the magnificent icebergs and snow covered peaks, looks at seals,
whales and life on board the cruise ship. Duration - 85 minutes
or could be reduced to just over the hour by omitting the
Argentinean section.
WHERE the WATERS ROAR and the
VULTURES SOAR |
A two part
talk based on the highlights of visits to Iceland and the
Spanish Pyrenees. Iceland has a small bird list but many waders,
skuas and ptarmigan can be closely observed against a backdrop
of some of the most spectacular waterfalls and glaciers in
Europe whilst by contrast, the Pyrenees have high peaks, birds
of prey, beautiful flowers, dragonflies and butterflies.
Duration - 80 minutes and cannot be reduced.
In recent
years we have spent some of our birdwatching holidays with
"our" birds in their wintering quarters in Kenya, the
Gambia, Egypt and the Cape Peninsula. This talk will give a
flavour of why it is not a bad idea to winter in these warmer
climes. Whilst not forgetting the familiar birds the talk will
include a large number of new species for the British
birdwatcher plus a selection of animals. Duration -80 minutes.
