Rizal: The Son of Hispanic-Filipino History and culture | Rizal: Hijo de la cultura e historia hispanofilipina | ||
Rizal has been studied as a historical personage separate from his context. However, he was the product of a unique and complex culture that had developed in our country throughout 18 generations. Today we know very little of that culture, in terms of its social and cultural context. We presume to know about it, based on what persists, what has survived the action of North Americanization and of time. The fact that it has resisted and refuses to disappear is proof of its deep roots. |

However, we know almost nothing about it because we do not study the Hispanic culture and spirit that were its foundations. |
||
It has been said: "We don't need Spanish. Filipino is enough." I say that this posture is erroneous because it reduces a whole to just one-half, whose result has been cultural impoverishment and a biased historiography. |
||
We must study both things, because both formed a whole -- Hispanic-Filipino history, culture and mentality. |
||
This is the great value of the biography of Rizal by W.E. Retana, and the entire body of works by this prolific and eclectic Spanish writer: they recreate the context. They provide the keys to the deep mentality and spirit of that rich, complex and valid cultural construction that was the Hispanic Filipino world. |

We must study. We must not presume to know. Those who have only begun to know are the ones who are most aware of the limits of their knowledge. Ignorance always goes hand-in-hand with unawareness. If you have no awareness of something, then it simply doesn't exist. You cannot learn about the unknown from the known. It is necessary to accept one's situation of not knowing, and put oneself in a disposition to learn from others. |
Debemos estudiar. |
||
But we will learn very quickly -- at quantum speed. Because all these things are already within us. This is what I have discovered. |
||
We must also examine the moral issues. | También nos incumbe examinar las cuestiones morales. |
||
Materialism gives no importance to the things of the spirit. Our North Americanization was a training in materialism that made the Hispanic era's excessive emphasis on religion synonymous with backwardness and absence of enlightenment. But we threw the baby out with the bathwater. |
||
However the spirit is in everything, especially in all human activity of a higher category -- true art, true culture. |
||
If there were no emotional and psychological bonds between us and that past, we could eliminate it once and for all. But this is not the case. There were values there -- profound values that were undermined during the subsequent colonization by the U.S. |
||
Materialism is not enough. Materialism without the spirit, without humanization, without love, is the most frightful plague that sows destruction in human relations and reduces the natural environment to a dead, soulless wasteland. |
