Miniature Quilts Auction
Many of us are ecstatic when we finally finish a quilt. However the idea of completing a large quilt for charity is quite daunting. We decided to scale down our ambitions to a miniature size. This endeavor made every one feel good: Our members actually finished a project, bidders had a wide selection of wonderful quilts to choose from, and we raised $926 (1999) for the local American Cancer Society! Adopt-a-Quilt
Each month, those who participate in the Block of the Month, make an extra block for our monthly charity quilts. These are lap size quilts that are to be donated to the Leavenworth Dialysis Center for use by patients during treatment. Each set of blocks is adopted by one or more members, the backing and batting are provided by the guild, and members Jerry Stube (Quilter's Quarters) and Henri Wilson have donated their long arm machines and time to quilt each one.
Reach to Recovery Tote Bags

Reach to Recovery is a visitation program sponsored by The American Cancer Society. It provides information and support for women personally affected by breast cancer by someone who has already been there herself -- the Reach to Recovery visitor. At the original contact between these two women an attractive tote bag is given to the breast cancer patient which contains lots of information as well as a pillow which can be used beneath the arm to take pressure off an incision. The fabric tote bags have a quilt block inserted on one side.
Our guild conducted a July 15th workshop which taught the construction methods of both the tote and the pillow. The general idea is to use orphaned blocks to make the totes. Quilter's Quarters, a local quilt shop, donated denim and other fabrics with which to complete the construction of the totes and pillows.
Post-Holiday Food Drive for Salvation Army
The holidays tend to deplete the stores of food banks. To compound this problem, many people only remember to donate during the holiday period. In 1999 our guild brought in canned and staple items during December and January and we donated over 6 grocery sacks stuffed full of items to our local Salvation Army food bank. The 2000 food drive concludes April 20th. Bring your items to any meeting. Carole Humphrey oversees this effort.
