There are often discussions on the brickboard regarding irregular shifting in the 850's - read this generic (really GM based) essay which talks about how electronically controlled trannies work, and why you might be getting certain strange feelings from your transmission. There's also some troubleshooting tips. (Latter parts of the essay are really GM based and so are not as relevant, but you could find equivalents in Volvo systems with a little detective work on diagnostic codes, etc.)
