850 Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)
- Notes on Flushing
Why
  • Here's one of the best essays you will find on the web regarding why it is important to flush ATF, despite what manufacturers may say regarding the lack of necessity to flush. Of course the bit on changing ATF fluid via "drain & fill" is generic information: if you have an 850, in my opinion, it is much easier to follow the modified Volvo method as detailed below &/or on Bay 13.

How
Here's the OzBrick (updated August 2001)
METHOD to flush ATF.
Remember that using the method above (& Bay 13) is the Volvo recommended method, so there is nothing wrong with this: just do it properly! Which means turning off the engine when you get bubbles coming through that clear tube, and inserting more ATF. The thread goes on about other topics relevant to trannies which may or may not be of interest, and largely relevant to older models.
  • Here's another thread discussing the need to turn off the engine and tools to deal with the hose clamp.
