JDM ENGINE TEAR-DOWN AND REBUILD The hardest part was tracing parts, as many are not available in North America. With the motor mounted on an engine stand, first task was to strip the JDM block of its hoses/vacuum lines. After removing the stock head, the cylinder bores actually looked pretty clean, minimally scored or scratched. No ridge at the thrust side indicates very minimal bore wear. The block was sent to BC Engines for cleaning, crank re-balancing, and shot-peening of stock rods (Prelude rods were used in the end). Flywheel was also balanced and lightened (pic in tranny section). The head was also ported and polished. Pistons used are from Wiseco, custom made from a group buy order with some 3rd generation Prelude owners. Bore size is 81.00 mm (with slight over-bore), compression ratio is lowered to 8.5:1 to hold up to boost. The stock camshafts were custom reground by Shadbolt Camshafts. The factory camshaft end play, and bearing radial clearance looked pretty good. While the block and head were getting milled, RC Engineering injectors were also received (320 cc's). Block pre-rebuild Old intake manifold Screen, bottom view Custom Shadbolt cams Valves re-ground Pulley marked Wiseco's in block JDM head gasket The valve cover was sand-blasted to bare metal, then powder-coated Blue metallic by Rainbow Powder-coating (the other option could have been chrome-plated for 200 bucks, a little steep in my view). Front side Back side BTW, top and bottom end gasket sets were imported from Japan by Redshift Racing. Had to wait a while for this kit to come in. On the package, lettering is in Japanese except for four letters reading "BOAT". A mix-and-match gasket set is used as well...3rd generation Prelude gasket kit donated its exhaust manifold gasket to the cause. All new cap and rotor was also ordered and came by boat. Wires are MSD 8.5mm Superconductors, originally intended for a '90-97 DOHC 'Teg. Problem is that the USDM distributor has its wires coming off 90 degrees to the block. The JDM distributor has its wires coming off towards the right side, parallel to the block. Therefore, the wires for the JDM block have to be longer than Prelude wires, but have to insert into the valve cover with the right plug length and sit flush on the valve cover. Redshift Racing made the pair of adjustable cam gear for me. Trick billet pieces, should add some ponies to this ride.
