"Arthur Nevin, with a wide European and American experience in theconcert and operatic activities of the best centers of both countriesis a remarkable asset to the teaching fraternity of Pittsburgh andsurrounding territory. His work in compostion has been accepted by thebest publishers in the country, and he has been the recipient of honorand recognition upon the occasion of the presentation of hiscompositions. Mr. Nevin was honor guest last season in Sewickley, whenexcerpts from his opera "Poia," based on the legends of the BlackfeetIndians, were presented in concert form with the composer at thepiano and director of the program. This opera being produced in theRoyal Opera House of Berlin, in 1910, the first American opera everaccepted there. In 1903-1904 he lived with these Indians and learnedtheir music and legends first hand, and during Roosevelt's presidencyMr. Nevin gave an illustrated lecture at the White House, withexcerpts from this opera, on his life among these people....From 1914to '19 he was conductor of the Festival Orchestra at Peterboro, Vt.,the MacDowell colony group and in 1924-25 was in France doing researchwork and composing. This opera is founded upon a religious myth of theNorth American Indians and musically founded upon themes gatheredamong the Northwestern tribes by Mr. Nevin. He holds the distinctionof being the only American having had an opera produced by a royalopera house in Europe. In 1918, his later serious opera, 'A Daughterof the Forest', was performed by the Chicago Opera Company, on whichoccasion Campanini, then director of this opera, insisted upon Mr.Nevin conducting the first performance."
