[236] "Historical Genealogy of the Woodsons and Their Connections" statesthat Elizabeth Ferris, daughter of Richard Ferris, "was descended froman ancient Norman family, Henri de Ferriers of Gascony. In AmericanAncestry, vol. VVII, is the following statement: 'The FERRIS familywas originally from Leicestershire, England, descended from Henri deFERRIERS, son of Gwalchelme de Ferriers, Master of Horse to the Dukeof Normandy.'" However, there is some speculation in this since thereis a large gap in generations in the listed genealogy between theFERRIER line and the Ferris line.

There is much speculation on whether the Ferris are related to theFerrars. There is a claim [I still need to verify the source] that theFerris line came over as headstones (I've been told that this meansservants). This appears contradictory since the Ferrar line was one ofthe major families of importance coming over to Virginia.
