My Opinion
As you would with a child, I would recommend preparing for an emergency BEFORE it happens. Keep the phone numbers to your vet, closest emergency vet hospital, poison control, etc. on the fridge (or with other important numbers) for quick and easy access in an emergency.. The last thing you want to do is thumb through the phone bookwhile your beloved pet is in pain or trouble. Also, you should couch your children's babysitter (and your children!) on what to do in case there is an emergency with your pet.
Many of us treat our pets like our family, yet we fail to take minimal precautions to keep them safe and healthy.
You might consider medical insurance for your pet. Just as with human policies, different benefit schedules can be purchased for different monthly premiums(ask your vet for a recommendation). In a dire emergency, you don't want your pet's prognosis to depend on the size of your savings account or credit card limit.
