Extinction is forever Save the wolves

Headlines/Media

The following is information taken from "Parade". Parade is a National weekly magazine insert in the Sunday Paper. The article was a cover story on the Alemeda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver, CO which is featured on Animal Planet's, "Emergency Vets".

When Your Pet Needs Care

If your pet needs medical attention, keep the animal as warm, comfortable and quiet as possible until you get to the doctor. The vets at Alemeda east advise taking your pet to an ER if the animal:

  • seems in particular distress;
  • collapses and is unable to get up;
  • hasn't eaten for 24 hours or won't drink water;
  • is bloated but can't vomit or has persistent violent vomiting or diarrhea;
  • is having seizures;
  • has injested pills, chocolate or anti-freeze;
  • appears to have a break or fracture.
Check the telephone directory to find an emergency clinic nearby.

My Opinion

As you would with a child, I would recommend preparing for an emergency BEFORE it happens. Keep the phone numbers to your vet, closest emergency vet hospital, poison control, etc. on the fridge (or with other important numbers) for quick and easy access in an emergency.. The last thing you want to do is thumb through the phone bookwhile your beloved pet is in pain or trouble. Also, you should couch your children's babysitter (and your children!) on what to do in case there is an emergency with your pet.
Many of us treat our pets like our family, yet we fail to take minimal precautions to keep them safe and healthy.
You might consider medical insurance for your pet. Just as with human policies, different benefit schedules can be purchased for different monthly premiums(ask your vet for a recommendation). In a dire emergency, you don't want your pet's prognosis to depend on the size of your savings account or credit card limit.
