Benma's Spring Splash II

GOLD AND SILVER have made the Pokemon universe more difficult in the quest to "catch 'em all." Mostly because of the fact that you can't get evolution stones easily. But anyways, new games mean new teams, listed in order by my best (a #1 in parentheses means it was on my first championship team), Pokemon that are improved in this version over those in Blue, Red and Yellow, and Pokemon that I like, but are just not good enough to use in battle. REMEMBER, this page covers ONLY POKEMON #151-251, with the exception of improved B/R/Y Pokemon

MY BEST POKEMON

#154...MEGANIUM (1)

Synthesis
Solarbeam
Body Slam
Sunny Day

NOT just for fire Pokemon, Sunny Day is the backbone behind my DOUBLE-COMBO Pokemon. It makes the sun bright, and as long as the sun is bright, Synthesis becomes more effective in recovering hit points, and Solarbeam can be used every turn. Body Slam is a necessary normal attack, since many Pokemon aren't weak against Solarbeam. Plus, the fact that it was my first new Pokemon means that this baby will be on ANY team I come to town with. It used to know cut for travelling purposes, but after a certain point it's just not necessary. Good thing there's a move deleter!

#157...TYPHLOSION...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 47

Flame Wheel
Smokescreen
Quick Attack

Typhlosion had Cut, but I deleted it while I make up my mind what to do. It learns Swift at level 45, but I will definitely get Flamethrower at level 60.

#160...FERALIGATR...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 44

*Slash
Bite
*Scary Face
Surf

First impression...this mofo is S-L-O-W SLOW!!! That's the only reason Scary Face might be worth keeping around. It learns Hydro Pump at level 58, but as you know I prefer Surf. But it's a nice change of pace, as well as the completion of the trifecta of starting G/S Pokemon.

#181...AMPHAROS (1)...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 60

Thunder
*Rock Smash
Thunderpunch
Thunder Wave

You've seen a variation of this lineup before. In G/S, the elemental punches are the talk of the town, not the beams/bolts of equivalent power and accuracy. Rock Smash is useful, but VERY weak in battle.

#182...BELLOSSOM...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 35

*Sleep Powder
*Acid
*Stun Spore
Moonlight

It learns Solarbeam at level 55, but do I use the natural choice Sunny Day to enhance it? That renders Moonlight rather ineffective, since it works best at night. I'm not exactly sure what to do with this cute Pokemon.

#189...JUMPLUFF...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 27

?Synthesis
?Leech Seed
???
???

Synthesis and Leech Seed offer good bases for the combos (when it learns them), especially if it can learn the TMs of Toxic, Sunny Day, and Solarbeam.

#195...QUAGSIRE (1)...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 64

Earthquake
Whirlpool
Strength
Surf

Can you tell that I used this Pokemon for travel? Maybe the most important thing to know is that Earthquake will cause damage to Pokemon who are in the middle of using Dig. Whirlpool is a good trapping move, both for capturing Pokemon and for using Toxic (which Quagsire may have in the future.) Being the only mud type (water/ground), it's also useful against electric smart-guys who think they're going to zap the water portion. Are they in for a shock!!!

#196...ESPEON...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 67

Psychic
Quick Attack
Morning Sun
Bite

One of EEVEE's two new evolutions, ESPEON is the Psychic one achieved via friendly evolution during the morning/day. While there is now balance with the addition of dark types and stronger bug moves, Psychic types are still a force to be reckoned with. Bite is there as a dark attack for anyone who wants to battle Psychic-to-Psychic. Sunny Day would be a good companion for Morning Sun, but what would I delete? Moves can't be recovered...

#205...FORRETRESS...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 31

*Endure
*Take Down
*Rapid Spin
*Self Destruct

Or something like that. I haven't used it since I evolved it. BUT, a steel type is always good to have around. It's ultra weak against fire, but other than that, it's OK. Spikes (level 49) is a nice attack to leave lying around, because every switch your opponent makes will cause them damage, making them think twice about regaining type advantages in battle. Explosion will be an upgrade for Self Destruct at level 39.

#214...HERACROSS...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 26

???
???
???
???

Battle team ready? Not yet. Flying types have a strong argument against it.. But it is the only Pokemon that can learn Megahorn, the strongest Bug attack. Finally, a Bug Pokemon that Psychics can be afraid of! The strange thing is, it doesn't learn what I would consider any good fighting moves...

#215...SNEASEL...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 41

*Quick Attack
*Fury Swipes
Faint Attack
Ice Punch

Sneasel learns an interesting little attack at level 57 called Beat Up. Damage increases for the number of Pokemon you have in your team (provided they haven't fainted.) It learns Slash at level 49, which I might use. It definitely needed an ice attack to play to it's dual type Dark/Ice status (be wary of Fighting attacks), and hopefully Ice Punch fits nicely there.

#229...HOUNDOOM

Headbutt
Flamethrower
Bite
Crunch

My faithful watchdog's bark is definitely NOT worse than it's bite. Bite may make the other Pokemon flinch, and Crunch may lower their special defense. So it's a tossup as to which is the better move. Of course it has to have a move to play up to the fire type status, so Flamethrower's the choice (as opposed to Fire Blast). Headbutt's a good normal-type attack to round out it's arsenal. Strike fast, strike hard! Good boy!! *Pets Houndoom*

#230...KINGDRA...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 84

*Twister
*Smokescreen
Surf
Blizzard

Can you say "No weaknesses?" The Dragon type status negates the Water weaknesses, so it's only susceptible to attacks from other dragons. If you think ahead, you can train one that has Ice Beam (which it only learns in B/R/Y). If not you have to teach it Icy Wind (weak) or Blizzard (inaccurate). It's as simple as that. Unfortunately, I had to make that choice. This is another "First-teamer" if you ever have to mix it up with someone in a poke-battle.

#243...RAIKOU...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 63

Spark
Reflect
Quick Attack
Crunch

This time, it's legendary cat/dog Pokemon that take center stage. It learns Thunder at Level 71, but it's the same decision as Kingdra's Icy Wind vs. Blizzard debate. Power or accuracy? I wish I had a good old Thunderbolt.

#244...ENTEI...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 40

*Leer
*Ember
*Roar
*Fire Spin

If anyone saw me play, they would tell you that Leer and Roar would be the first to go. And they will be. It learns Flamethrower at level 51 and Fire Blast NATURALLY at level 71. A Toxic would definitely complement the Fire Spin. I just need to check it's speed levels.

#245...SUICUNE...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 40

*Leer
Surf
*Roar
*Gust

Another one of the "pretty" Pokemon. It's AMAZINGLY drawn on the Pokemon: The Johto Journeys cartoon. It learns Bubblebeam, Mirror Coat, and Hydro Pump at levels 41, 61 and 71, respectively. This is a good Water second go to behind Kingdra.

#248...TYRANITAR...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 58

Earthquake
Crunch
*Thrash
Rock Slide

Can you believe this is my first really strong Rock Pokemon? I never backed Onix or Golem during the first campaign. This is also the only Pokemon I would seriously consider turning evil (by feeding it bitter medicine and letting it faint all the time) just because it looks so ferocious. But that would be too inhumane, so I wouldn't be able to go through with it. Thrash will be replaced with Hyper Beam at level 75.

#249...LUGIA...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 76

Psychic
Recover
Hydro Pump
Fly

It's either Hydro Pump or Surf, and since it can take a beating, I'll let the inaccuracy slide. Ancient Power comes along at level 88, but does it really fit in? Aeroblast would also be nice, but this one was caught at level 70 and as such did not know it.

#250...HO-OH...CURRENT STATUS, LV. 51

Fly
Recover
Sacred Fire
Fire Blast

It learns Sunny Day, Swift, and Ancient Power at levels 55, 66 and 88 respectively, but where do they fit in? I suppose I could lose one of the Fire moves. As good as it is, it's still only on my second team.

IMPROVED or ALTERED BLUE/RED/YELLOW POKEMON

#3...VENUSAUR

Just when you thought Venusaur couldn't get any better, they let it learn Synthesis as well. So if you teach it Sunny Day and Solarbeam, you're set. But that leaves you one move short for the Toxic/Leech Seed combo.

#68...MACHAMP

They gave the #1 fighting Pokemon from B/R/Y a new move for this game--Cross Chop. Not only is it strong, but it often get's critical hits. Not exactly what I want to see when using Sneasel.

#89...MUK

The problem with poison types in B/R/Y was that all the poison attacks were relatively weak. Well, G/S takes care of that, as Sludge Bomb is now the strongest Poison attack. Not that you'd want to go up against Psychics...

#94...GENGAR

Gengar, another of my picks from the last game, learns a new move called Curse, which cuts its HP in half but takes away 1/4 of the opponents life each turn. If you add Mean Look (no escape) to that, a trainer could find themself in serious trouble.

#103...EXEGGUTOR

It may not learn Synthesis, but Sunny Day will help with Solarbeam. Of course, that would leave you without Psychic. It learns Egg Bomb naturally now, as it is no longer a TM. But keep the Leech Seed/Toxic combo!!!

#143...SNORLAX

I wasn't a big fan of Snorlax, even if it was good in the first round of games, because Rest costs you two turns. But now that it can learn Snore in Gold and Silver and attack even while sleeping, it's a worthwhile investment. Just do it!

#149...DRAGONITE

And last but not least, Dragonite learns a REAL Dragon attack in this game, OUTRAGE. Just something else to throw in its already impressive repertoire.

OTHER POKEMON I LIKE BUT WILL NOT USE IN BATTLE

#171...LANTURN

The only Electric-Water Pokemon in existence, this may be as good at eliminating weaknesses as Kingdra. Another candidate for the Spark vs. Thunder debate.

#172...PICHU

It's cute, but that's about it.

#175...TOGEPI and its evolution,
#176...TOGETIC (1)

It's cute, and the evolution can fly, other than that it's pretty lame.

#197...UMBREON (1)

A pure Dark type, this could also make the Battle list. Moonlight is good for healing, and Bite and Faint Attack play to the Dark status. Quick Attack currently rounds out its repertoire.

#199...SLOWKING

One of the few Pokemon known to be able to speak (not in the game), the Water/Psychic Pokemon seems to be no different from Slowbro, a decent choice in the first round of games.

#208...STEELIX

All of the Steel Pokemon are pretty cool. This is nice because unlike Forretress and Scizor, it doesn't have a double fire weakness. And if you care, it's also the largest and heaviest of all Pokemon.

#212...SCIZOR

You just read it! But a Scyther evolution is cool...

#217...URSARING

Pretty much the same as Snorlax.

#221...PILOSWINE (1)

Ground and Ice...it's definitely one of your two best options (Jynx) for your first time through Blackthorn City's Clair and Champion Lance.

#224...OCTILLERY

An octopus! Naturally learns the coveted ICE BEAM, as well as some other good moves.

#226...MANTINE

A manta ray with qualities exactly like Gyarados.

#227...SKARMORY

At least it's not a Bug-Steel combination, but it would definitely be better if there were a PURE STEEL Pokemon, which this one isn't (flying).

#235...SMEARGLE

It can Sketch almost any move; that's why Smeargle can be so good in the right hands. Just try and sketch Recover or Rest though. If you can, let me know.

#251...CELEBI

YES, Nintendo SCREWED US AGAIN by leaving out a Pokemon. Apparently Celebi can't learn all the TM and HMs like MEW can, but this Psychic/Grass Pokemon is the only TIME Pokemon, although there isn't such a thing as far as moves are concerned. This will definitely be the feature of a movie (if it isn't already in Japan). Notice the shrine in Ilex Forest? That was erected to honor this Pokemon who can travel through time.
