Biography / Profile

In the years before the Great Purge and the Clone Banks Krypton's scientists began a project in partnership with the alien geneticist Bertron. They would fund his research while he would share with them his knowledge in genetic engineering. The project was simple enough, an infant lifeform was created and then exposed to the predators and environmental conditions of the remote world Bertron had chosen for his laboratory. At first the child survived only two seconds outside, but samples were taken from remains, subtly altered genetically and a new clone grown overnight. In the morning this new clone would be exposed outside and would last a fraction of a second longer before being killed.

The project continued with a new improved subject to be tested each day. A thousand generations of evolution were compressed into thirty years. At first the subject survived seconds outside, then hours, it adapted to the environment and killed off the predators. The final incarnation was dubbed the Ultimate by Bertron. The principal was the survival of the fittest, a creature that could defeat any opponent, survive any environment and if actually killed it would regenerate in such a way that it could not be killed in the same manner again. The creature breached the walls of the laboratory and killed Bertron for the torture that he had inflected on its previous incarnations. The Kryptonian scientists escaped with their data but the creature escaped to the stars.

The creature bounced from world to world causing untold destruction in its wake. On Khundia its onslaught necessitated the first recorded co-operation between the warring clans to remove the creature from the planet, in his wake the unified Khunds would take to the stars as a major interstellar power. When the creature encountered the Green Lantern Corps it left hundreds dead and thousands injured, it was only seen off by the sacrifice of one of the Guardians of the Universe. Blasted clear of Oa the creature crash landed on Calaton where it was eventually defeated by their champion the Radiant. The Calatonians dealt with the creatures body as they did with all deceased murderers. The body was chained to stop the spirit escaping and cast adrift into space. In time the inert body crash-landed on Earth and buried itself deep under the ground.

The creature however was designed to regenerate from death and over the centuries it eventually came back to life. Escaping its tomb it began rampaging across the Eastern seaboard of the United States. It left several members of the Justice League badly injured. It was dubbed Doomsday by Booster Gold. Doomsday sensed the presence of the Kryptonian Superman who it viewed as Bertron, its creator and tormentor. The following mortal combat killed both Superman and Doomsday. Afterwards the fake Superman Cyborg attached Doomsday's body to an asteroid and flung it into deep space.

Eventually Doomsday came back to life, this was sensed by Superman (who had also returned from death) who set out to find answers about the creatures origins. He found Doomsday rampaging across Apokolips, Darkseid defeated and the Cyborg attempting to invade the planet. Superman with the aid of a Mother Box and Waverider was finally able to trap Doomsday in the entropy at the end of time.

The villian Brainiac managed to free Doomsday from the end of time and for a time possessed the body of the beast. He managed to defeat the JLA, but was finally defeated by Superman. Doomsday was then locked in an eternal prision generated on the moon by the JLA transporters.

Abilities and Equipment

Doomsday has Daxamite/Kryptonian level strength and has even bested Darkseid in combat. While not able to fly its jumps can cover dozens, even hundreds of miles. The most dangerous ability of the creature however is its ability to regenerate from a death like state. When this occurs it is then near invulnerable to the attack that killed it before. For example when Doomsday attacked Calaton for a second time he easily tore apart the second Radiant where the first has defeated him.

Connections/Glossary

Known Varients

Hypertime Doomsdays

The villain Black Zero collected togther a legion of Doomsdays from across Hypertime to create a army of destruction. He used various technologies to restrain them, but the interference of Superboy forced him to dumb them into an empty Hyperzone as a last resort.

Radiant and Calaton

Calaton was one of the most beautiful planets in the Galaxy until it was attacked by Doomsday. The ruling royalty of Calaton gave up their lives to release their unique metahuman energies. These energies were then transformed into the artificial entity called the Radiant. Doomsday had no defence against this energy being and was eventually defeated. The Calatonians gave Doomsday a burial in space and went back to rebuilding their world. Centuries later Doomsday returned to Calaton, a second Radiant was created to battle him but Doomsday had evolved and killed this new champion. The planet was only saved by the intervention of Superman and Waverider who transported Doomsday to the End of Time.
