The House at Saddle Creek
In the Beginning . . .
We came across an ad for Saddle
Creek Golf Course in the NCGA golf magazine in 1995. We had
started to look for a course to join and build a little retirement home,
so we took a drive (just under two hours) to the tiny
town of Copperopolis, in the heart of the California Gold Country -
about 70 miles from Yosemite. The locals like to say its "below the
snow, but above the fog."
As we made our way to Copperopolis, one of us (guess) started to
worry that we had somehow taken a wrong turn and were going to end up in
outer Mongolia. The terrain was beautiful, but it seemed we were truly
in the middle of nowhere. We passed Lake
Tulloch, which was so breathtaking, we (the royal we that is) forgot
our anxieties.
Only six or seven holes were done, but the real estate broker had a
few old clubs in her SUV, and offered Chas the opportunity to play number
14. Using someone else's club, on a hole he'd never seen
before, Mr. Arnie Robinson, parred the damned thing. The dye had been
cast. We put a deposit on lot number 78 and started to plan our
little getaway home. . .
. . . until someone (guess) freaked out and decided Outer Mongolia
wasn't close enough to Nordstroms. We got our deposit back and
started to look elsewhere.
To make what could be a very long story at least a little bit
shorter, a wonderful, relaxing weekend trip to Tahoe (except for the
four hour drive each way) made us (that's the royal us, again) realize
that if Copperopolis was in Outer Mongolia, Tahoe was on another
planet. So, in 1997, we went back to Saddle Creek, picked out lot
84, and now ....
. . . Saddle Creek has REAL air, incredibly blue skies, beautiful views of
Yosemite, coyotes, rattlesnakes, bull frogs, eagles, owls and it
has us!
