The House at Saddle Creek

Then the Plans . . .

We thought the hard part was over. We were wrong.

The next step was to find an architect (oy!) and try to convey to him our vision of our new little getaway place.  We decided to go with Scott Davis, who has offices both in Los Altos and in Copperopolis, because his plans were different from the run-of-the-mill stuff we had been seeing.  We also met Steve Whitehurst, Scott's Foreman who lives in Copperopolis, and right away we knew we'd made the right right decision.  We'd also made friends for life!

We explained to Scott that we wanted a little A-frame weekend/vacation getaway place and that we planned to move to Saddle after a couple of years.  He listened patiently as we described the kind of rooms we wanted, how the house needed to be very open and very light, with lots of space and . . .

. . . he laughed out loud when we told him it should be small - under 2000 square feet! So much for a little A-frame . . . we ended up with almost 2900 square feet!

These are the front and back elevations (we speak "architect" now!).

Its a split level, but looks like a single-story from the front.

Front Elevations

The entrance is at ground level. Chas' office is to the immediate right, with a separate exterior entrance.

The hallway past the office leads to the two guest bedrooms - the one on the left will have our exercise equipment

From the entrance, you step down to the main level to the Great Room, which has double-glass doors looking out on the canyon and a fireplace on the wall to the right.

To the left of the Great Room is the dining area and kitchen - with a granite topped island (!) as well as a small pantry and powder room.

Lower Level

The steps up to left are to a balcony, from which you enter the master bedroom.  There's a sitting area, bathroom and walk-in closet (for me - his is in the downstairs guest room - just kidding)!
