Ragnarok

Ragnarok (rag'-nuh-rahk)
other: Ragnarök, Ragnarøk
("Doom of the Gods"), also called Gotterdammerung

In Norse Mythology, this means "the end of the cosmos". It will be preceded by Fimbulvetr, the winter of winters. Three winters like this will follow each other, with no summer in between. Conflicts and feuds will break out, and all mortality will disappear.

This is the beginning of the end...

The wolf Skoll will finally devour the sun. His brother Hati will eat the moon, casting the earth into complete darkness...the stars, will vanish from the sky. The cock Fjalar will crow to the giants and the golden cockGullinkambi will crow to the gods. The dead are raised by a third cock. The earth will shudder with earthquakes, and every bond and fetter will break, the horrible wolf Fenrir will be freed. The sea will rear up for Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent will twist and writhe with fury as he heads towards land. With every move, Jormungand will stain the sky and the soil with his poison.

The churning waves caused by the serpent will free the ship Naglfar, and with the giant Hymir as their commander, the giants sail towards the battlefield. From the realm of the dead a second ship will set sail. This ship carries the inhabitants of hell, and Loki is their helmsman.

The fire giants will leave Muspell, led by the giantSurt. They will join against the gods. Surt will carry a sword that blazes like the sun itself and will scorch the earth.

Meanwhile, the sons of Odin and the heroes are called to the battlefield by the of Heimdall sounding his horn. Gods, giants, dwarves, demons, and elves come from all corners of the world to ride towards the vast plain of Vigrid (battle shaker") where the last battle will be fought.

Odin will fight Fenrir in battle. Thor will attack Jormundgand and win, but the god of thunder will perish from the serpent's poison. Surt will seek out the sword less Freyer who will be slain by the giant. The one-handed Tyr will take on the monstrous hound Garm, and will kill one another. Loki and Heimdall who are age-old enemies, will cross each other's path only one more time. Neither will survive the engagement. The battle between Odin and Fenrir will last a long time but Fenrir will capture Odin and swallow him. Odin's sonVidar will spring towards the wolf and kill him with his bare hands, ripping the wolf's jaws apart to avenge his father's death.

Then...

Surt will fling fire in every direction. The nine worlds will burn and perish, and the earth ... will sink into the sea.

After the destruction, an new world will arise from the sea and be filled with goods. Some of the gods will survive and others will be reborn. Wickedness and misery will no longer exist and gods and men will live happily together and the descendants of Lif and Lifthrasir will inhabit this earth.
