TEFL in the UK

Union Jack
For those wishing to practice their TEFL qualification in the UK before (or after) going abroad, the following sites have excellent links to schools in Britain and Northern Ireland. We have found that the most effective way of approaching schools is with a cover letter and a copy of your CV. When including the CV, paste it to the bottom of the letter as many organisations have a (reasonable) fear of viruses and are unwilling to open attachments.

If you have already heard about an international school of English with a good reputation then visit their website where you can contact them directly (eg Linguarama.com, ih.com etc.). There are more schools looking for teachers than are advertised so you might as well try your luck!

Watch this space for the opportunity to paste your CV on this site, so you can refer employers straight to your details online.

***NEW SERVICE*** If you are looking for a UK TEFL course, use the contact us page to send us details of your requirements - we will then do our best to find a course in an institution near you.

The Association of Recognised Emglish Language Services is a good first stop when planning to work in the UK. All members must adhere to a set of standards (which can be viewed at the website). Members are listed by location or course type.

The English in Britain site allows you to search for institutions by location or any other given keyword. The institutions are accredited by the British Council so you can expect high standards at these schools also.

If you've had enough of low pay, irregular hours and a generally unstable career then this links is for you. It's not easy to make a career in TEFL back in the UK, but neither is it impossible. Try universities and training colleges for long-term appointments. When using the search engine on this site, it's worth entering 'english' rather than TEFL (as the latter omits jobs under "ESP", "EAP" etc.)

tefl.com is an excellent place to look for jobs in the UK (and abroad). You can search under job type, location, and limit the results by how recently they have been posted. You can also add you CV to the database and request job alerts by email.

tefl.net has jobs by country. When you search under 'Europe' try using the 'find' tool to search for jobs containing the text 'UK', 'Britain' or 'England' etc. We've had mixed ratings for this site, but check it out as an extra job resource.

The Guardian comes up trumps with this excellent 'Unlimited'section for jobs in TEFL (UK and abroad), as well as articles, contacts, resources and weekly featured countries connected with EFL. Take some time to have a browse through the headings and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
